  2. Summary • As the evening came over Dante and Virgil, Dante is questioning if he is worthy enough to travel to the underworld. Virgil consoles him telling him that he was sent by Beatrice, a woman that Dante loved, to watch over him and make sure he is safe. After hearing this Dante is ready to go on with his journey.

  3. New Characters • Beatrice: a woman who Dante know while she was alive. Virgil was sent by her to help Dante. • St. Lucia: Messenger from the Virgin Mary. • The Virgin Mary: Sends the messenger St. Lucia to Virgil. • Aeneas: A character from Aeneid. • St. Paul: One who, like Dante, writes of his view of Hell.
