  1. Adverbs That Modify Verbs

  2. Adverbs are words that modify (describe) verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. • EX: She looked sadly at the broken plate. • EX: He jumped high. V ADV ADV V

  3. Adverbs can answer 3 questions. • How? — She smiled brightly. • When? — He ran yesterday. • Where? — They fell downstairs.

  4. Where, in the sentence, can you find an adverb? • If the adverb is modifying an adjective or an adverb, it is usually found just before the word it modifies. • If the adverb is modifying a verb, it can be found almost anywhere in the sentence. Check out the chart on the next page.

  5. Also…… • Most adverbs are formed by adding –ly to an adjective. For example, the adverb ACTIVELY is formed from the adjective ACTIVE. • What adjective would fondly be made from? • What adjective would quietly be made from? • Most words that end in –ly are adverbs. But not always! After, often, now, and later are all adverbs too. (But they don’t end in –ly.)

  6. You try! • Michelle and Julie have just arrived at Camp Monatowa. They want to read the “First Morning Schedule for New Campers” but the schedule isn’t quite finished. Finish the schedule for Michelle and Julie by adding adverbs from the box.

You’ll have some time for a swim before lunch. Return to your cabins, and _____ get into your swim suits. Walk _______ along a path marked “To the Dock,” and wait at the dock _______ for your swimming instructor. She is _______ late, and you won’t have to wait _______. Have a great swim! And…welcome to Camp Monatowa!

  9. Try a few more! Tell what question each underlined adverb answers. (How? When? Where?) • He always enjoys his vacations in that sunny land. • Vann went quickly to Padre Island. • Barrier islands effectively block the high waves. • Sue went outside to play. when? how? how? where?

  10. Just a few more! What word does the adverb modify (describe)? Remember, all the adverbs will modify verbs in this activity. • Starlings often live in the city. • Sometimes, starlings are a nuisance to city people. • Many people chase starlings away. • In fact, some cities relentlessly wage war on starlings. • Starlings originally lived in Europe.
