TIP #9 Redundant Bandwidth: Failover or Failure • Insurance is NOT the most interesting of topics. • Of course, no one says thanks when everything is up & working. • But mayhem can and will happen. • Historically, you have a 1-in-3 chance of a network event/year. So over a 3-year subscription, on average, you have 100% chance of an outage. • Lost network = lost customers = lost revenue = lost company-job • The best insurance is planningnot panicking. • But did you know redundancy is easily achievable today? TIP #9 Redundant Bandwidth: Failover or Failure There are now many enablers of manageable “always-on” Internet failover. • Alternate fiber access (can be as cheap at $700). • High[er] speed Ethernet-over-Copper alternatives equivalent to fiber. • Aggressively priced and increasingly available broadband cable (Comcast Business Class is $90-$160), FiOS, etc. • 4G • Providers who package dual ISP connectivity as a turn-key service. • Voice/SIP failover access via the Internet. • Everybody can find something in their budget for failover.
