  1. Improvements of Puerto Rican Population Health by Inducing Hypoxia Research Proposal Angelin M. Figueroa Rivera Prof. Edgar Llera Biol 3009 RISE-Summer Bridge July, 9 2012

  2. Introduction Many diseases found commonly at lower altitudes occur less at high altitudes; such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and others. I will study the Puerto Rican populations to investigate the benefits in hypertension and asthma diseases that they will experiment with hypoxic therapyat sea level, using altitude simulators.

  3. How Hypoxia Works? What is Hypoxia? • Regenerate cells after a range of 20 to 30 days after hypoxia therapy • Is the low content or lack of • oxygen in the body

  4. Hypoxic Therapy Effects Personal Genetic and Maximum Sports Performance Power, Resistance and Strength Muscular and Cardiovascular Energy and Adaptation Promote New Cells Generation, Increase the Red Blood Cells and ATP Production Erythropoietin Hormone (EPO) Plus Iron Inductor Factor by Hypoxia 1 (HIF-1) Protein compound of two Subunits (hypoxia inducible factor-1alfa, who is inactive, and hypoxia inducible factor-1beta, who is degenerating because is only activated over 6000ft sea level) Hypoxia - Lack of Oxygen in the Body

  5. Hypothesis The Puerto Rican people submitted to intermittent hypoxic therapy will experiment hypertension and asthma improvements after being submitted to a high altitude protocol with hypoxic altitude therapy system.

  6. Objectives • To determine how the low content of oxygen tension in tissues (hypoxia) improves the hypertension and asthma diseases in Puerto Rican population, with intermittent hypoxic therapy system.

  7. Methodology • Two types of hypoxic trainings; workout hypoxic training and intermittent hypoxic therapy (IHT) • Experimental groups • Negative control • Positive control • Weekly medical tests • Permissions of the IRB • Consent and nondisclosure agreement IHT

  8. Expected Results and Conclusion • Experimental group with asthma will eliminate asthma • Experimental group with hypertension will normalize their blood pressure
