Get ready for the Albert Lea Science Fair taking place on Saturday, February 23! Entry forms are due by November 30, with approved forms returned by December 10. Important deadlines include research completion by January 11 and final data and conclusions due by February 1. Students will be judged on scientific thought, creativity, understanding, clarity, and technical skill. Join us for an exciting day of science demonstrations and awards starting at 1:00 PM. Entry Form • Contact Information – Legible, First and Last name • Testable Question – How does X affect Y? How does A compare to B? Can it be measured? (Grades 4 – 6) • Demonstration (3rd grade only) • Changes must be submitted by January 4
Getting Started • Turn in entry form • Testable Question • Research – Keep track of sources • Form Hypothesis • Do experiment – keep track of materials used, procedure, and data • Form conclusion • Work on Report and Display Board
Science Fair • Provide transportation for your student • Arrive and register at the mall early, judging begins at 9:00 am. • Provide a card table for your student • Avoid the area during judging • Awards are at 1:00
Judging • Judges are volunteers • School Staff • Community Members • High School Students • Students are judged by three people and their score is an average of the three scores.
Scoring • Scientific Thought (Scientific Method) • Creative Ability (How unique or original) • Understanding (Research) • Clarity (Oral and written communication) • Dramatic Value (Display) • Technical Skill (Durability of display, etc.) • Each area earns 1 – 5 points • 45 – 50 = Trophy; 35 – 44 = Blue; Less= red
Award Ceremony • Done by grade level, 3rd grade first • An MC will announce your student’s name and award • Students come to the stage to receive the award
Science Museum • Must participate in the Science Fair • All day trip – Thursday, March 21 • Chaperones are limited • Includes museum and Omni Theater (Tornado Alley Movie)
