  1. Online Learning Episode 6

  2. Target Competency • At the end of this activity, you should be able to evaluate the appropriateness of internet resources to the learning tasks.

  3. Specific Tasks • Observe a class. Take note of the topic being presented. • Surf the net to find sites that provide support materials and/or interactive programs on the topic. • Evaluate the materials and/or sites.

  4. Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet to the Learning Process

  5. ADVANTAGES: • Offers a vast amount of resources that are otherwise not available in any one geographical location. • Internet also fosters and enhances various skills of its users. Communication skills and writing skills can be directly affected through its use.

  6. Students are faced with more information than they could ever use or need. • With e-mail, students can have contact with other students around the world studying the same things they are. • Internet can be a huge source for children trying to look up information for a school project or do homework. • It allows all students to have access to information whether or not their family has a set of encyclopedias.

  7. Internet allows students to read the latest news of a certain subject they are studying. • Students may have longer attention spans with technology than with other forms of traditional learning. • Internet is an added bonus for teachers looking for more information on subjects.

  8. Teachers can have their own class pages that parents can check at their convenience to see what is going on in the classroom. • Allows students to communicate to their teachers and also allows teachers to communicate with parents through emails. • Teachers have the chance to be able to teach at more than one place simultaneously.

  9. They can gain from others' knowledge and experiences, participate in chat rooms, share ideas and solutions and learn about the many diverse cultures out there. • Students can contact other students or their teachers via the E-mail if they have queries about any information. • Sharing of information, discussions on a particular subject, etc. can be easily carried out using the Internet

  10. DISADVANTAGES: • Students giving out too much information about themselves. • Sites too commercialized with little educational value. • Access to material that parents might not want their children exposed too.

  11. Not all students can afford to pay for the internet pay. • Not all students have their own computers or laptop. • A lot of the material found on the internet is not credible, and most students do not know how or care to learn how to decipher what is valuable and what is not.

  12. Students become too dependent on the internet for research and, consequently, have no idea how to find relevant information from a book source. • When computers/Internet is use in teaching, there are tendencies that the effective teaching will disappear between the teacher and the learner. This is due to the intervention of the attention that is given by the student to the computer machines. In other words, computers could become a barrier in communication between the teacher and the learner.

  13. Health risk is another consideration (eyestrain, repetitive motion injury and more)

  14. EVALUATION OF ONLINE MATERIALS

  15. Comments • It gives more information about a certain topic but on the other hand it is not reliable because everyone can edit it. It gives a good definition to the topic and it classifies its kinds. It has lots of examples. However, it lacks exercises.

  16. The approach in introducing the topic is very unique it has discussions and interactive exercises. It’s like the other sites, yes it gives good information, it has lots of examples, yet it lacks exercises. But the good thing is it has a site map.
