    1. Different Kinds of Waste & Solutions By Taylor Brockmiller 7th grade St. Paul Lutheran School

    2. Solid Waste About 230 million tons of garbage are thrown into a landfill every year! About 4.6 pounds of trash are thrown away every day by every person. And not even of all of that garbage is recycled.

    3. Always a Good Thing! The 3 Rs The three Rs of recycling is a wonderful thing to people, plants, animals, and the entire environment. These three Rs are: Reuse Renew Recycle The 3 Rs are always an easy simple solution to all recycling problems, along with specific solutions for each kind of waste, as you will see on these next few slides.

    4. Burying Solid Wastes. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that many of the United States landfills have been closed for 1 or 2 reasons. The first reason being that the landfills are full and that there is not enough room to bury them. The second reason is landfills are contaminating the water that runs under the holes that make the landfill. This water that is running under the landfills is our drinking water. After the water is contaminated it is very hard, expensive, and sometimes even impossible to clean the water.

    5. Burning Solid Wastes We could and could not burn solid wastes. Incineration does result in energy, but it is possible that it will release toxins into the air and create ashes which must be placed in a hazardous-waste landfill. Which brings us right back to the beginning: that cities are running out of places to put their garbage/trash.

    6. Possible Repair for Solid Waste It is a very up front and obvious way to reduce solid wastes. Stop throwing things out. We can cut back by using the 3 Rs Reuse Renew Recycle

    7. Hazardous Waste Hazardous waste causes long and short term risks to humans, plants, animals, and even the environment. You may not know is that hazardous waste is not just an industrial problem, there is also hazardous waste problems in your own home. There are many everyday things that we use that need special disposal, such as: Paint Motor oil Pesticide Drain opener Prescription drugs Cleaner Light bulbs Air fresheners And batteries. And those are just a few!

    8. Who is responsible for hazardous waste? Gas stations Auto repair shops Dry cleaners Photo developers All of these generate a lot of toxic waste. There are many, many more also. These are just a few!!!

    9. Is There a Solution? Yes, in fact there are many solutions! Here are some of the solutions: Reuse as many things as you possibly can, Reduce waste and pollution, Recycle and compost as many things you can. There are many more solutions but these are some of the main ones.

    10. Sewage Though landfills have a very big impact on the environment, we also need to be concerned about the water. Water waste is a threat to public health, the environment, and even safety. All of the citys water waste ends up in rivers, lakes, and oceans. Just think about it. Swimming in water waste everyday!

    11. Treating Sewage Treating sewage is extremely costly! It also uses tons of energy which in some ways goes against what we want to do.

    13. Earthly Efforts! Many people/places around the world are coming up with ways to reduce wastes: Using wastes as raw materials to build homes. Generating energy. Nourishing crops. There are many more ways to do this these are just a few.

    14. Some More Things on Earthly Efforts! Even if half of the worlds population cut back what they throw away and recycle it, or turn off electronics when not needed, we would be cutting back on of the worlds population of waste.

    15. What Will Happen If We Do NOT Recycle If we do not start to recycle, this world will become even filthier than it already is. We will lose more and more plants which we eat and use for many other things. We will lose animals.

    16. Who is Responsible? We all play a role in recycling. Not any one of us can blame another for the wastes. No one is perfect and recycles everything that needs to be recycled. Therefore, we are all responsible.

    17. What Can We do? We can do many things to reduce wastes. But using the 3 Rs pretty much covers them all. Plus, it is a very easy and effective way!

    18. Think About It Think about everything you have thrown away today, that could have been recycled. Think: could those things have been Reused Renewed Recycled? If you recycled just the things you have used so far today, you would be reducing.
