  1. Conjugate redox pair • Conjugate redox pair is made up of two species that differ by a certain number of electrons.

  2. Half Reactions • A half reaction is a reduction or an oxidation reaction. • Zn Zn2+ + • H+ + ®H2 • MnO4-® Mn2+

  3. Answers • Zn  Zn2+ + 2 e- • 2 H+ + 2 e-® H2 • MnO4- + 5 e- + 8 H+® Mn2+ + 4H2O

  4. REDOX-Balanced ionic equation in acidic solution Step 1 Write the half-equations for oxidation and reduction showing conjugate pairs. Step 2:In each half reaction, balance all elements except O & H. Step 3:Balance O by adding H2O. Step 4:Balance H by adding H+. Step 5:Balance charges by adding e-. Step 6:Multiply all coefficients in 1 or both half reactions by an integer to get the number of e- in the two half reactions equal. Step 7:Add the 2 half reactions together & cancel out any species that appear on both sides of net reaction. Step 8:Check that charges and atoms are balanced.

  5. Write the ionic equation for the following half equation • .

  6. Practise • Write a complete ionic equation for the following half equations. • Fe2+ -> Fe3+ • MnO4- -> Mn2+

  7. Answer • Fe2+ -> Fe3+ + e- • MnO4- + 8H+ -> Mn2+ + 4H2O • MnO4- + 8H+ + 5e- -> Mn2+ + 4H2O • 5Fe2+ -> 5Fe3+ + 5e- _______________________________________________________________ • MnO4- + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ + 5e- -> Mn2+ + 4H2O + 5Fe3+ + 5e- Cancelingout the electrons: • MnO4- + 8H+ + 5Fe2+ -> Mn2+ + 4H2O + 5Fe3+
