Aims & Objectives • To provide the student with an opportunity to learn through curiosity and develop the ability to critically evaluate evidence • To provide the student with an opportunity to explore a core subject or topic in greater depth • To allow the student to explore other subjects beyond those covered in the core • To encourage self-directed learning • To develop "generic" skills (report writing, oral presentation etc)

  3. Learning Outcomes • Specific to the particular SSM • Agreed with SSM Supervisor • Heterogeneous • Should be clearly stated in written work

  4. General points • Can be proposed by staff • Can be proposed by students (from SSM 3 to 7) • To graduate must pass 6/7 (4/5 for direct entrants to Year 3) • SSM can be linked to Electives • SSMs are ‘stand-alone’ • SSMs can be undertaken abroad • Comprise 21% of the curriculum

  5. Timing All blocks 5 weeks in duration

Assessment • A to G grading based on attainment of learning outcomes (code of assessment) • Assessment instruments vary depending upon the nature of SSM: • OSCE • Oral presentation • Supervisor assessment • But at least 60% must be in a form accessible by External Examiners e.g. report / dissertation/ essay

  8. Strengths • Wide choice • Assessment has high validity • Can study non-medical subjects • 21% of curriculum exclusively devoted to SSMs • Can be student-driven (~58% are student-proposed in years 4/5)

  9. Weaknesses • Assessment problematic due to heterogeneity • Difficult to keep track of student progress • Can be employed for revision in final year
