Vision Statement. ‘To enable all children and young people to take part in a wide range of OSHL activities that will extend, enrich and enable their learning now and in the future.’ …therefore providing: ‘An extended schools provision that builds upon the core educational experiences of all children in Pembrokeshire.’ Pembrokeshire OSHL Strategy and Initiatives
OSHL includes activities and community focused initiatives that; support the curriculum and learning experiences by: • Enabling • Enriching • Extending This can make a significant contribution towards the WAG seven core Aims for children in Wales.
Our strategy will be to help schools and organisations establish a range of activities. Such as: • Enrichment activities. ‘Radiowaves.’ • Extending curriculum areas. ‘Computer Club for Girls ( CC4G )’. • Enabling learning alongside parents. ‘Cook it’ • Activities for ‘More able and Talented’. • Looked after children provision. • ‘Widening access’ Higher education links.
Radiowaves • Pupil radio network goes online in ten schools. • Ysgol y Preseli has developed a bi-lingual station aimed at developing F.O.S. links. • Opportunities for enrichment extend to thousands of pupils from KS2 to KS4 • Linked to other enrichment initiatives
CC4G Pembrokeshire objectives. • Developed initially in the Pembroke F.O.S. as a key element of school’s aspirational. ‘Aiming High project.’ • To promote improved transition links. • To work on developing existing business links with schools. • Developed because numbers of girls selecting ICT at KS4 and KS5 is half of the boys’ uptake.
Project Impact • Pembrokeshire innovative model being highlighted and recognised by WAG as being exemplar example of good practice. • Improved transition links. • Attendance: pilot - 90%, phase 2 - 96% • 85% of pupils reported increase in confidence level • 90% reported more likely to do ICT examination • 86% more likely to enter ICT career • 85% thought they should continue at Club • 66% said they have used elsewhere something learned at the Club
Cook It • The Cook-It! project is a step ahead, because it recognises all the factors that influence the food choices made by young people. • The Pilot initiative has recently been recognised by WAG as being one of the most innovative in Wales, due to the partnership approach adopted. • Launched in 7 pilot primary schools. • More schools engaging with “cook it” in stage 2 of the initiative.
Buzz clubs ( more able and talented ) • Art workshops developed in with County Arts Co-ordinator. • Buzz activities developed with Radiowaves initiative and Aberystwyth University, widening access partnership work • Partnership work Buzz days with Pembrokeshire College supported by LNG.
Children’s University Prifysgol Plant • County strategy aimed at celebrating achievement through accredited activities linked to Children’s University. " It is truly investing in the future of Wales and the future of our children " Jane Davidson AM
