  2. Progressivism & the Supreme Court • 14th Amendment= laws deprived them of their property • Court sided w/ business & declared legislation unconstitutional • Lochner v. NY, overturned a law that limited work to 10 hrs. • Freedom of contract= workers should be free to accept any working conditions

  3. Labor Unions • Cont. to fight for worker’s rights & the closed shop • Most unions didn’t want to threaten the system • Some wanted an economic system controlled by workers= socialism

  4. Labor Unions- AFL • American Federation of Labor, worked w/in the system • Samuel Gompers • Major organization • Excluded unskilled workers • Skilled workers= greatest potential to cause change

  5. Labor Unions- ILGWU • International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union • Jewish & Italian • 1909, “Uprising of 20,000” • Demanded union recognition • Results= mixed • Employers wanted an open shop

  6. Labor Union IWW • Industrial Workers of the World, opposed capitalism • Vowed to overthrow the system • All workers • Used industrial sabotage • Did raise wages • Fear of their revolutionary ideas, gov’t cracked down= faded from power
