  2. Basic Information • Exam Date – May 7, 2010; 8:00 am • Exam Cost -- $86, assistance available • Exam Scoring -- 1 through 5, 3 considered passing • Exam Benefits -- can earn college credit with 3 or above (depends on school)

  3. Exam Format • MC (80 questions in 55 minutes) – 50% • DBQ (1 question in 45 minutes) – 25% • FRQ (2 questions in 70 minutes) – 12.5% each • 3 essays are administered in a 115 minute block, but you are encouraged to divide your time as suggested above

  4. Multiple Choice • Have approximately ¾ of a minute per question • Divided between 4 time periods • Colonial to 1789 [15 – number from 2009 exam] • 1789-1865 [17] • 1865-1914 [19] • 1914 to present [29] • Can also divide according to theme • Political [26] • Economic/social [37] • Diplomatic/cultural [17] • **Only guess if can narrow down to 2-3 options.

Essays • You are provided a 15 minute reading period to brainstorm and outline your essays • DBQ can be about anything • 2009: From 1775 to 1830, many African Americans gained freedom from slavery, yet during the same period the institution of slavery expanded. Explain why BOTH of those changes took place. Analyze the ways that BOTH free African Americans and enslaved African Americans responded to the challenges confronting them. • 2008: Analyze the ways in which the Vietnam War heightened social, political, and economic tensions in the United States. Focus your answer on the period 1964 to 1975. • First FRQ addresses 1492 to 1865; choose one of two options • Second FRQ addresses 1865 to 1980; choose one of two options *typically one essay will cover the colonial period and one will cover post 1945*

  6. Scoring the Exam • MC • Number correct - (# wrong x .25) x 1.125 • DBQ • Essay score (out of 9) x 4.5 • FRQ • Essay score (out of 9) x 2.75 • Essay score (out of 9) x 2.75 • Add them all together

  7. Scoring the Exam Cont. • Total of 180 pts possible • MC – 90 pts possible • DBQ – 40.5 pts possible • FRQ – 49.5 pts possible • Scoring Divisions • 5 (114-180) • 4 (92-113) • 3 (74-91) • 2 (42-73) • 1 (0-41)

  8. Example of a 5 • MC: • [60 - (20 x .25)] x 1.125 = 62 • DBQ: • 6 x 4.5 = 27 • FRQ • 5 x 2.75 = 13.75 • 5 x 2.75 = 13.75 Total Score: 62 + 55 = 117

  9. Example of a 4 • MC: • [50 – (30 x .25)] x 1.125 = 49 • DBQ: • 5 x 4.5 = 22.5 • FRQ: • 5 x 2.75 = 13.75 • 5 x 2.75 = 13.75 Total Score: 49 + 50 = 99

  10. Example of a 3 • MC: • [40 – (40 x .25)] x 1.125 = 34 • DBQ: • 5 x 4.5 = 22.5 • FRQ: • 4 x 2.75 = 11 • 4 x 2.75 = 11 Total Score: 34 + 45 = 79
