    1. Lesson 4: Christianity Has a Better High Priest: Jesus Christ (3:1-10:18)--Part 1 Christ has a priesthood (house). (3:1-6) WARNING: DISBELIEF AND DISOBEDIENCE CAN CAUSE ONE TO MISS THE REST/REWARD. (3:7-4:11) Christ serves as high priest now. (4:12-16) Christ is insightful. (4:12-13) Christ is sympathetic. (4:14-16)

    2. (Heb 3:1 NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, (Heb 3:2 NKJV) who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. (Heb 3:3 NKJV) For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. (Heb 3:4 NKJV) For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. (Heb 3:5 NKJV) And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, (Heb 3:6 NKJV) but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.(Heb 3:1 NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, (Heb 3:2 NKJV) who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. (Heb 3:5 NKJV) And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, (Heb 3:6 NKJV) but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end.

    3. Christ Has a Priesthood (House) (3:1-6)--Contd (Heb 3:5 NKJV) And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, (Heb 3:6 NKJV) but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. In what sense is Christ over a house? What is the house (household) that Christ is over? What is the differences between being a servant [not slave] (3:5) and a son (3:6)? Why was it important for the readers of Hebrews to understand Christs superiority over Moses? (Heb 3:1 NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, (Heb 3:2 NKJV) who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. (Heb 3:3 NKJV) For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. (Heb 3:3 NKJV) For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4. Christ Has a Priesthood (House) (3:1-6)--Contd (Heb 3:1 NKJV) Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus (Heb 3:6 NKJV) but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm to the end. The word confidence in 3:6 is often translated bold, boldly, openly, freely, or plainly. The word rejoicing in 3:6 is often translated boasting, glory, or glorying. When combined with the word confession (NKJV)/profession(KJV) in 3:1, what does that imply for those in His calling? 5. WARNING: DISBELIEF AND DISOBEDIENCE CAN CAUSE ONE TO MISS THE REST/REWARD. (3:7-4:11) (Heb 3:8 NKJV) Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, (Heb 3:10 NKJV) Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart,. (Heb 3:19 NKJV) could not enter in because of unbelief. (Heb 4:2 NKJV) For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. What had been the problem with those in the rebellion? (3:8, 10, 19; 4:2)

    6. WARNING: DISBELIEF AND DISOBEDIENCE CAN CAUSE ONE TO MISS THE REST/REWARD. (3:7-4:11) --Contd (Heb 3:11 NKJV) So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest.'" (Heb 3:16 NKJV) For who, having heard, rebelled? (Heb 3:17 NKJV) Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? (Heb 3:18 NKJV) And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? How did that problem show itself? (3:16, 18) What happened as a result? (3:11, 17-18) (Heb 3:8 NKJV) Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, (Heb 3:9 NKJV) Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. (Heb 3:10 NKJV) Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, 'They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.' (Heb 3:11 NKJV) So I swore in My wrath, 'They shall not enter My rest.'" (Heb 3:12 NKJV) Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; (Heb 3:13 NKJV) but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (Heb 3:14 NKJV) For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, (Heb 3:15 NKJV) while it is said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." (Heb 3:16 NKJV) For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses? (Heb 3:17 NKJV) Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness? (Heb 3:18 NKJV) And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? (Heb 3:19 NKJV) So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief. (Heb 3:8 NKJV) Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, (Heb 3:9 NKJV) Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years.

    7. WARNING: DISBELIEF AND DISOBEDIENCE CAN CAUSE ONE TO MISS THE REST/REWARD. (3:7-4:11) --Contd (Heb 3:8 NKJV) Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, (Heb 3:12 NKJV) Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; (Heb 4:9 NKJV) There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. (Heb 4:1 NKJV) Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. What is the danger for us today? (3:8, 12; 4:9, 1)

    8. WARNING: DISBELIEF AND DISOBEDIENCE CAN CAUSE ONE TO MISS THE REST/REWARD. (3:7-4:11) --Contd (Heb 3:13 NKJV) but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (Heb 3:14 NKJV) For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, (Heb 3:15 NKJV) while it is said: "Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." How can we avoid the fate of missing our rest/ reward? (3:14, 15) What will be working against us? (3:13b) What should be working for us? (3:13a)

    9. Christ Serves As High Priest Now (4:12-16) Christ is insightful (4:12-13) (Heb 4:12 NKJV) For the word of God is living and power-ful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Heb 4:13 NKJV) And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. (Heb 4:14 NKJV) Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God. Who is it that discerns the thoughts of our hearts and will judge us? (John 5:22, Rom. 2:16, II Cor. 5:10, II Tim. 4:1, Rev. 2:23, Rom. 8:34, Heb. 7:25) (John 5:22 NKJV) "For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, (Rom 2:16 NKJV) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. (2 Cor 5:10 NKJV) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (2 Tim 4:1 NKJV) I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: (Rev 2:23 NKJV) "I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. (John 5:22 NKJV) "For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, (Rom 2:16 NKJV) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

    10. Christ Serves As High Priest Now (4:12-16)--Contd Christ is insightful (4:12-13)--Contd Christ is the one to whom we must give account. (John 5:22 NKJV) "For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, (Rom 2:16 NKJV) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. (2 Cor 5:10 NKJV) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ .... (2 Tim 4:1 NKJV) I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Christ is the discerner of our hearts. (Rev 2:23 NKJV) and all churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And I will give to each one of you according to your works. (John 5:22 NKJV) "For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, (Rom 2:16 NKJV) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. (2 Cor 5:10 NKJV) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. And I will give to each one of you according to your works.

    11. Christ Serves As High Priest Now (4:12-16)--Contd Christ is sympathetic (4:14-16) (Heb 4:14 NKJV) Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. (Heb 4:15 NKJV) For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. (Heb 4:16 NKJV) Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. How important is it to your confidence that God understands what we feel to know that Christ took fleshly form? (John 5:22 NKJV) "For the Father judges no one, but has committed all judgment to the Son, (Rom 2:16 NKJV) in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel. (2 Cor 5:10 NKJV) For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
