Research Grants Programs in the Division of Astronomical Sciences Astronomy & Astrophysics Advisory Committee 12 May 2006
“R&A” in NSF (non-facilities funding) NSF-wide programs - contributions managed outside AST, e.g. IGERT - initiatives, e.g. nanotechnology, ITR, math sciences - programs managed by AST, e.g. CAREER, REU Individual Investigator programs managed within AST Solicited proposals for special programs, e.g. PREST, AAPF Unsolicited proposals Annual deadlines, e.g. AAG, ATI Special projects, e.g. LSST, GSMT, SKA TDP, NAS/CAA, AAS Centers Science and Technology Centers, e.g. CfAO Physics Frontiers Centers
Astronomy Division Budget - FY2005 • Astronomy Research & Instrumentation - $75 M • NSF-wide programs and priorities - ~ 17% • Individual Investigator programs within AST • AAG - ~ 43% • Instrumentation (ATI, TSIP, TDP) - ~24% • Special programs and MPS priorities (e.g. POU) - ~ 12% Science & Technology Centers (STC) - ~5% • Center for Adaptive Optics (CfAO)
Priorities in AST Grants Programs Preserve and, when possible, grow the AAG program Take advantage of MPS, NSF priorities e.g. Physics of the Universe, ITR/CI for NVO Keep management of programs within AST when possible, control the growth of ‘initiatives’, preserve flexibility
