  1. RS:X EQUIPMENT WORKING PARTY REPORT TO 2012 AGM

  2. 2011 AGM That the RS:X Class shall establish an equipment working party now to evaluate and put forward a submission for approval by the 2012 RS:X AGM on the adoption of the RS:X Evolution, either in whole or in part, as the class legal equipment for the 2016 Olympic Regatta.

  3. 2011 AGM The Executive noted that the equipment evaluation was a small part of this but that the group should also consider the effects of any equipment change on MNA’s, Youth sailing and future class development.

  4. Working Group • Bas Edmonds • Gur Steinberg Coach • Ben Barger Sailor • Allison Shreeve Sailor • Olga Maslivets Sailor • Oli Woodcock Coach • Yan Bourverne Coach

  5. Objectives for WP To change to make a clear performance increase by changing the equipment OR To change to reduce the equipment options to make the equipment more versatile for all sailors.

  6. Equipment • Board – lighter construction with some detail changes • Sails – 9.0 and 10.0 • Fins – 64cm and 68cm – change in construction • Boom – new wider back end • Centreboard – lighter construction

  7. MNA and Sailor Survey • 87 responses • 74% responded that they wanted to change to Evolution equipment • Survey was other wise inconclusive from comments given “We need a bigger sail, lighter board and bigger fin” “Sail area should be reduced. It puts people off starting RS:X because it's a big step up from youth classes such as BIC Techno.”

  8. MNA and Sailor Survey Comments for the Class • Price • Fins – more consistency required • Growth of the class – to change would stunt the growth of the class • If considering change - Step by step change – concentrating on the consumables

  9. Testing – Puerto Sherry • Limited interest from countries and sailors • Testing over 6 days – good range of conditions • Sail and fin combinations • Two boards – one in original RS:X configuration tested against RS:X Evolution configuration • Sailors made to swap to feel differences in equipment
