  2. DEFINITION • Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb • Often end in -ly • Tells where, when, how, or to what extent • Makes the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another verb more definite

  3. ADVERBS MODIFYING VERBS • Can come before or after the verbs they modify • Examples • She quickly agreed. • The rain fell softly • He sang beautifully • He hardly moved • Fill the tank completely.

ADVERBS MODIFYING ADJECTIVES • Words that modify a word that helps describe the noun or pronoun in a sentence • Answers the question: To what extent? • Comes directly before the adjective • Examples • Beth did an exceptionally fine job. • Slightly cooler temperatures are in the forecast • Mr. Smith is an especially talented chef.

  6. PRACTICE: IDENTIFY THE ADVERB • My coat was torn badly. • Ronald hastily dribbled the ball. • She already had planned her report. • It was quite interesting. • She only just arrived
