  5. ON-DEMAND (cable tv) • First developed as Near Video on Demand in the 1990s • Recently growing. About 3% of total TV viewership. • Some ratings include on-demand viewings within 3 days of original broadcasts. • Includes original ads for about 3 days, then switches to shorter ads.

  6. ON-DEMAND (cable tv) • Cable companies love on-demand: keeps customers tethered to cable. Comcast customers watch 400 million hours per month • Networks like on-demand: they can keep their fragmented “appointment TV” together by offering more flexible scheduling

  7. Web video services • Netflix • Amazon Instant Video • Hulu & HuluPlus • iTunes

  8. Web video services • Web Video Services pay content producers for rights to shows • Netflix, Amazon & Hulu are available on most “smart” platforms: computers, tablets, phones, streaming TV devices, smart game consoles, smart TVs, smart blu-ray players • iTunes is only offered on Apple products (except computers)

  12. Amazon instant video • About 2% of Web video services in US • Much larger database of movies & TV shows than Netflix • Mostly Pay-Per-View: Current TV episodes are available for $1.99 ($2.99 for HD) • Current movies are available for $3.99-$14.99

  13. Amazon instant video • Original Programming • Alpha House - 2013 • Betas – 2013 • Several series for children • Amazon Studios • Anyone can submit a script or video pilot • Projects are reviewed by Amazon & Internet audience • 12 projects have been funded, including Betas

  16. REBROADCASTERS • Rebroadcasters “re-broadcast” TV and cable networks live over the Internet • Many illegal rebroadcastershave been shut down • Broadcast & cable networks fight the legal ones • Aero uses (legal) mini transmitters to transmit broadcasts over the Internet • NFL has threatened to move games to pay-only TV
