  2. Discovery of the broken wall • “ the walls of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates are burned with fire. “ • “The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. “

  3. Nehemiah intercedes with God. • Sat down and wept • Mourned for many days. • Fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

  4. The content of nehemiah ‘s prayer • Lord, God of heaven ,O great awesome God, you who keep your covenant and mercy with those who love you and observe your commandments. • Please let your ear be attentive and your eyes open , that you may hear the prayer of your servant which I pray before you , now, day and night, for the children of Israel your servants.

  5. Confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against you. • Both my father’s house and I have sinned. • We have acted very corruptly against you . • We have not kept the commandments , the statutes, nor the ordinances, which you commanded your servant Moses .

  6. Remember the word that you commanded you servant Moses, saying • “if you are unfaithful , I will scatter you among the nations. • But if you return to me, and keep my commandments, and do them, though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and I will bring them to the place which I have chose as a dwelling (place ) for my name..

  7. These are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. • Please , let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant , and to the prayer of the servants who desire to fear your name and let your servant prosper this day. “

  8. Nehemiah is the cupbearer for the king Artaxerxes. • Nehemiah held cup for his king . • But Nehemiah could not hide his sad face in the king’s presence. • Nehemiah explained why he was sad. • The reason : the walls are broken down and gates are burned with fire in Jerusalem.

  9. Nehemiah found favor in the eye of his king. • What is your request ? • Nehemiah ‘s request #1 : send him to Jerusalem • Amazing fact: the king granted his request ! • Request # 2: letter of approval to pass through different regions from Babylon (Shushan ) to Jerusalem

  10. Nehemiah 2:1-8 • Request #3: permit to obtain building materials from the regions . • All requests #1,2,3 were granted to Nehemiah

  11. Arrival of Nehemiah in Jerusalem • King artaxexes provide Nehemiah with military protection ( captains of the army and horsemen) • Sanballat, the horonite • Tobiah , the ammorite • Both are deeply disturbed by Nehemiah’s mission and intent to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem

  12. Nehemiah inspects the broken walls • Nehemiah do nor reveal any secret information to any one. • Nehemiah makes the first move at night. • Nehemiah went around the walls in person by night. • Nehemiah inspected / examined the situation/ circumstance in person.
