  3. What the Symbols Mean • > is greater than • < is less than • = is equal to

  4. How do you compare and order whole numbers? • Which is greater: 28,748 or 28,527? • Line up the digits by place value. 28,748 28,527 • Look at the digits from left to right. Find the first place where the digits are different. The 2’s are the same, 8’s are the same, the 7 and 5 are different. • Compare the values of the digits. The numbers compare the same way. 7 hundreds > 5 hundreds

  5. Comparing More Than Two Numbers • To compare more than two numbers, use the same steps: 28,746 28,746 is the greatest number. It has the ```````most hundreds. 28,562 Then compare the other two numbers. 28,526 28,562 is greater than 28,526. It has more tens. You can write the comparison as: 28,846 is greater than 28,562 and/or 28,526. 28,846 > 28,562 28,562 is less than 28,846. 28,562 < 28,846
