  1. Reporting Student Progress to Parents Understanding the Shift to K/1 Standards Based Report Cards A Resource for Parents

Purpose Statement The purpose of this report card is to clearly communicate and report student progress and achievement of targeted common core and essential standards and student learning behaviors. It is intended to support parents/guardians and students in understanding targeted strengths and areas in need of improvement based on the standards taught and students’ progress over time.

Rationale for Change Standards-based reporting provides: More detailed information that is easier to interpret as it separates reporting on academic and learner behavior standards, with clear expectations for each Clear communication of progress for students, their strengths and areas that need further development and support for priority standards based on common core and essential academic standards Clear communication of progress for students, their strengths and areas that need further development for student learner behaviors

  4. Overview of Common Core The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of shared national standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics for Kindergarten through 12th grade. The Common Core State Standards: Allow teachers to develop students’ understanding of the content on a deeper level by focusing on the most vital concepts Provide a more logical progression of skills that spiral and build in complexity from one grade level to the next

Overview of NC Essential Standards Content area standards specific to North Carolina and reflective of the essential knowledge and skills needed to be active citizens in the 21st century Like the Common Core Standards for Math and English Language Arts, the Essential Standards are coherent and include logical progressions for deep understanding of essential Science and Social Studies concepts over time. Aligned with Common Core Literacy Standards

English Language Arts (ELA) Reading Foundational Skills Language Writing Reading Literature & Informational Text Content Areas: Science Social Studies Origin of Priority Standards Math Counting and Cardinality (K Only) Number and Operations in Base Ten Operations and Algebraic Thinking Measurement and Data Geometry

  7. Sample Priority Standards Priority Standards are based on targeted standards or critical areas from the Common Core State Standards for Math and ELA (English Language Arts). ELA Sample Priority Standards: Kindergarten: Retell fiction stories, including character, setting and major events. First Grade: Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in informational texts.

Description of Marking Criteria 4 The student has surpassed the grade level standard. 3 The student has met the grade level standard. 2 The student is making acceptable progress toward the standard. 1 The student needs extensive support at school and at home to meet the grade level standard. Not Assessed/Reported this grading period.

  9. Learner Behavior Standards Learning behaviors are an important part of the learning process and essential for success in school. During the course of the school year, students are expected to exhibit these learning behaviors often and grow “consistently” in all areas. Example Learner Behavior Standards: Listens to and follows school and classroom rules Accepts responsibility for behavior Solves conflict appropriately Shows respect for peers, adults and property

Learner Behavior Marking Guide 3 The student surpasses expectations of the learner behavior established in the classroom. 2 The student meets expectations of the learner behavior established in the classroom. 1 The student needs additional support to meet expectations of the learner behavior established in the classroom.

  11. How to Utilize Reporting Develop a positive relationship with your child's teachers. Use the reporting standards as a guide to understanding grade-level expectations. Observe and note progress with these expectations across time. Identify areas requiring additional time/effort. Ask about specific ways you can help your child at home. Examine work samples and celebrate progress with your child. Ask specific questions related to your child’s grade level. Encourage/Support development of learning behaviors.
