  3. Hands represented: Power: conductor of flames Theft: stole the book Infection: Diseased/Rotten action Hunger: Ravenous for knowledge Guilt Tainted On the surface…

  4. Guilt- Thoughts Actions Betrayal Tainted- Linked to his guilt in that he will never feel clean or the same again Guilt & Tainted

  5. “This is a sorry sight” (2.2.18), says Macbeth, looking at his bloody hands after he has committed murder. • “Will all great Neptune’s ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?” (2.2.57-58). Literary Reference: Macbeth

  6. Lady Macbeth goads her husband for his cowardice and dips her hands in the blood while saying, “A little water clears us of this deed” (2.2.64). • Ironically, when she loses her sanity, she sees blood on her hands that she cannot wash away, no matter how much water she uses. Macbeth continued

Montag and Macbeth: Guilt for their crimes • Montag- Betraying his friends or his way of life; stealing books; returning a different book • Macbeth- Killing a man Montag and Lady Macbeth: Feel tainted • Montag- No actual blood on his hands, but the guilt of his actions remains • Lady Macbeth- Madness forces her to cope with her guilty role on the murder by seeing “unwashable” blood on her hands Fahrenheit 451 vs. macbeth

  8. The Macbeth allusion serves to compare Montag’s thoughts to those of Macbeth & Lady Macbeth by focusing on the idea of guilt leading to a tainted persona. Conclusion
