  1. Online Degree Programs Designed for Public and Non-Profit Mental Health and Human Service Personnel University of Maine at Augusta Grace M. Leonard Mary Jo Blazek

  2. 1980-1985 • An interactive television system (audio/visual) transmission created at the University of Maine at Augusta to allow delivery of specialized training and education at 5 community hospitals.

  3. 1985 - 1987 • Two commuter campuses linked to an interactive television system to allow for college credit courses for day and evening classes.

  4. 1986 • A.A. Social Services approved by University of Maine System Board of Trustees

  5. 1988 • Delivery of Social Services Associate Degree Program broadcast statewide

  6. 1988 - 1990 • Series of preventable patient deaths at state funded Augusta Mental Health Institute led to a class action suit against the State.

  7. 1990 - 1992 • Class action suit led to legislation to create a better educated mental health workforce for community mental health settings. Upon completion of courses, students become certified as Mental Health Rehabilitation Technicians. Agencies hiring graduates receive Medicaid reimbursement.

  8. 1992-present • The University of Maine at Augusta becomes a leader in distance delivery of mental health education by offering courses for day, evening and night shift personnel statewide

  9. 1997 • B.S. Mental Health & Human Services approved by the University of Maine System Board of Trustees • Becomes the largest enrolled degree program in the state with approximately 1,000 degree and certificate students taking classes statewide via interactive television, compressed video, web/online and traditional classes.

  10. 1997-present • Delivery of web-based asynchronous courses instituted to reduce the barriers of time and location

  11. 2005-present • Students able to complete entire certificate requirements as well as the major degree requirements for the associates, bachelors and post baccalaureate degrees in Mental Health & Human Services asynchronously through web-based classes
