  3. 1. Prejudice operates in at least 9areas of life in our community: race, religion, gender, ethnicity, economic class, age, sexual orientation, disabilities. • 2.Discriminationmeans using the differences among human beings as reasons to actively deny individuals or groups their rights to participate in community.

  4. 3. Direct discrimination refers to unequal treatment, exclusion or negative judgments directed toward persons or groups based directly on a factor such as race, religion, or ethnic background. It can be done through personal acts or through social or political structures. • 4. Indirect discrimination refers to the negative ripple effect that follows an act of direct discrimination.

  5. 5. The cycle of exclusion refers to barriers that interfere with rightful participation in community. (Examples: Discriminatory actions and prejudicial attitudes and stereotyped images work together.) • 6.Justiceseeks to break the cycle, tear down barriers, open the doors and create inclusive communities that promote the well-being of all.

  6. 7. The Great Commandment is to love God and love your neighbor. (Matthew 22:36-40) • 8. The crucial question for Jesus is “Who is my neighbor”?

  7. 9.Jesus’ understanding of neighbor differs from the narrow understanding of neighbor in the following way: • The narrow understanding of neighbor refers to people who live near us or people we have something in common with (same skin colour, faith, education, income). For Jesus, “neighbor” referred to anyone who needs His love.

  8. 10. Jesus was often in trouble with the authorities because He associated with the wrong kind of people: tax collectors (Matthew), sinners, prostitutes (Mary Magdalene), lepers, fisherman (most of the Apostles), etc.

  9. Using your note and your own opinions answer the questions on your handout.
