  2. Introduction I have created this presentation to explain the main computer maintenance tasks that has to be done in order to keep the system run properly . I hope you understand the contents of this presentation.

  3. Virus protection What is a virus protection and a antivirus ? Antivirus and virus protection is a software installed into our computer which is a computer program used to ,detect and react to malicious viruses and worms infecting computer systems. These software's are installed into computer systems to perform certain computer maintenance tasks such as a full system scan. What are the benefits of installing this onto the computer systems? By installing a antivirus software into the computer systems many changes will happen , our data will be protected against viruses and worms , we can perform full systems scans and we can beware of any harmful viruses which mat tend to affect our data.

How to install antivirus . • I have used the internet to upgrade my antivirus software , upgrading means getting the latest version from the software already installed into the computer systems , you may also purchase your own CD ,but it is much easier doing it online ,and here are the steps that I have followed: • Access internet explorer • Enter homepage (www.norton.com) • on the side navigation bar click on updates and renewals button • on the three option choose the one you like ( I have chosen the on in the middle) • have a look at the product specifications given • click on either buy download( download online) or buy only packages send home) to proceed • choose wither you will keep to what you want or take the option provided from them • follow to the checkout ,until the finals step (either products end home or downloading ) On my illustrations ,I have not completed the process , I only went up to the checkout but did not , complete the process)

  11. Full systems scan What is a full systems scan ? A full systems scan is a feature provided within your antivirus software ,as part of protecting your computer system from getting infected of viruses , the full systems scan also helps you to identify ,the infected data and ,you would also have the opportunity to fix any problems occurred. What are the benefits of performing a full system scan ? There are several benefits of performing the full system scan that include keeping track of data ,which means you can get warned ahead of any infected data or data that are going to be infected ,which gives you time to decide what you would like to do with that data.

Scan schedule In my example I have scheduled the full systems scan ,so that the computer automatically performs the scan for me on a certain day (example Friday) ,which means that I do not have to remember myself to get this activity done the computer will do so for me. On the next few pages I have given you the steps to follow

Service pack What is service pack 3 (windows XP) A service pack is a software that fights against bugs and viruses it also help hackers from hacking our computer systems and data saved onto it. , it helps the operating system to keep running healthy . There are various types of service packs for various operating systems ,the one I have used is the service pack 3 for windows XP. What are the benefits of installing the service pack 3 for windows XP? The benefits of installing the service pack software is that it helps to manage our computer systems , it helps us to specifically keep our data save .

How to install service pack 3 windows XP This are the steps I have followed: • Insert CD/DVD into disk drive • it should load up itself • if not double click my computer on your desktop • find the CD • double click CD (it should auto run now) • if not right click onto the CD and then click on run • After that all the process will be on screen instructions , each screen will tell you what to do ,it will be very simple to follow . ( I was unable to find the appropriate screen prints for this task)

  17. Clean up tools What are clean up tools? The Disk Cleanup tool is a software that helps you free space on your hard disk drive it will search for files and folders that can be deleted safely . You can choose to delete some or all of the files. Disk defragmenter is a type of clean up tool . What are the benefits of clean up tools? clean up tools help your systems to be clean and ,they help you to maintain a clean and fast running systems .

  18. Process In my example I have used the disk defragmenter to clean up and to free space of my disk as well as to remove unwanted data . Here are the steps that I have followed. • start menu • click on control panel • click on performance and maintenance • click on rearrange items … the third option • the disk defrgamentation screen will open up • On that screen click on start defragmenter • It will start the process • After it has completed the screen automatically will close

  23. Drive formatting What does disk formatting mean? Drive formatting means , removing unwanted or corrupted data as well as repairing the drive , for example by formatting a floppy disk you are completely removing the contents and it will be as new. After formatting your drive will be ready to store data onto . What are the benefits of formatting a drive ? By formatting a drive you are cleaning the drive ,and formatting enables you to remove data that are corrupted or hard to remove normally.

Formatting a floppy disk I have formatted a floppy disk ,and this is how I have formatted it : • insert the floppy into the drive • click on my computer on your desktop • find the floppy disk (icon will be displayed ) • right click on the floppy disk • choose format • a screen will open up • click on format button • A message will popup confirming the process • agree to it and the process will start • After process completed the window will go away . Next pages will show you screen prints .

  26. firewall What is a firewall? Firewalls is a software which is required to protect our systems from hackers hacking ,and from unwanted viruses spreading from web files .For example we can simply infect our systems with virus by opening an email or by accessing a website ,the firewall will block websites containing viruses it will also prevent our computers from getting infected . What are the benefits of installing a firewall? By installing a firewall into our system ,we can be sure that our computer is safe and protected ,from viruses and hackers hacking our system.

  28. Creating folders What are folders : Folders are storage space , they are areas where files and documents can be stored into , you may create folders very easily from your right click option. What are the benefits of creating folders ? Your data will be organised , clean and well structured , easy to find .

  29. Create folders Creating and deleting folders can be very easy and this is how it is done : • start menu • My documents • file –new-folder • once created simply rename the folder and job done

  34. Copy and delete file What does copy folder mean ? Copying folder means creating a duplicate of certain folders ,it may be either on the same location or on a different location to the original . Benefits of copying folder? May prevent data loss ,you may be sure that your data is kept save some where or the other . What does delete files mean ? Simply known as remove files and folders ,getting rid of data you don’t want or need no more. What are the benefits or deleting data? Save plenty of space on your hard rive and time or confusions of data and much more.

Copy and delete file Files and folders can be copied and deleted easily and here is the process of doing this: First decide which file to be copied and where to be copied from then: • select file from desired location • right click • copy • select location to paste in • right click into window • click on paste • file has been pasted See screenshots on next pages

  38. Now that the file has been copied and pasted ,in order to delete the files simply highlight the file that needs to be deleted and then on the right hand option click on delete.

  39. If you are sure about deleting the file then click on ,yes to confirm deleting the file .

  40. What are Compressed file Compressed files are files those size has been reduced , the benefits of doing so is very simple and easy ,because the file size will be reduces

Compression file Files can be compressed to reduce the size of it ,reducing the file size will save disk space , and this is how to compress a file : • Select folder to compress • on the right hand side option • Click on send to • Compressed zipped file • And then the folder will be compressed
