  1. Ecozones in Canada

  2. Guiding questions • What is an ecozone? • How are ecozones grouped? • Impacts of ecozones and changes in ecozones? • Which ecozone (s) do we live in?

  3. What is an ecozone? • An area of the earth’s surface that has a unique combination of plants, wildlife, climate, landforms, and human activities.

  4. How are ecozones grouped? • Criteria for grouping: area’s geology, landform, soil and vegetation, climate, wildlife, water, and human activities.

  5. Types of ecozones • Boreal: a forest ecosystem that can survive in northern, specifically subarctic regions. • Taiga: Northern transition, trees are much shorter and spaced out as it is colder and drier. • Maritime: Land connected with the sea can be considered maritime • Cordillera: Large chain of mountains or mountain ranges, that runs along a coastline • Shield: Large area of precambrian rock that forms the core of a continent

  6. Comparing ecozones

  7. Good to know… • Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the value of all economic production in the ecozone • Growing season is the average number of days per year when the average temperature is higher than 5 Celsius. • Your textbook’s figures are outdated!!! • That’s so old school!

  8. Changes in ecozones • Will change in one part of the system affect change in ANOTHER part of the system? • Yes! Why? • Parts are connected to form an entire zone • Ex: a change in temperature in an ecozone will affect which vegetation and plants can grow which animals can survive which crops and animals humans eat

  9. Which ecozone do we belong to? • With your seat partner, look at pg 161-163 and determine which ecozone we live in.
