  2. There are many famous women around the world. Women have excelled in the fields of arts and literature, politics and governance and also in the field of science and inventions. Here we look at some of the famous women around the world, who paved the way and have shown that women are on par with men in their accomplishments. 

  3. Susan B. Anthony • Born 1820 • 1900 persuaded the University of Rochester to admit women • her acquaintance with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, led her to join the women's rights movement in 1852 Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton

  4. Clara Barton • Born 1821 • Teacher for forty years • Helped in surgery during the civil war • Entered the battlefield as a nurse • Founded the American Red Cross because she was impressed by the National Red Cross

  5. Amelia Earhart • 1928 flew over the Atlantic Ocean • 1930 flew solo over the Atlantic • 1937 lost trying to fly around the world

  6. Eleanor Roosevelt • Committed to social reform • Dedicated to the abolition of child labor • Persuaded her husband, the president, to sign many executive orders that barred discrimination in the administration of various New Deal projects

  7. DOROTHEA LANGE • Born 1895 • Photographer of the great depression • Many of her photos censored by the U.S. government • Exposed Japanese internment camps through pictures • Most famous photo “Migrant Mother” Migrant Mother

Oprah Winfrey • First job at 17, when she was hired by WVOL radio in Nashville • Attended Tennessee State University • 1976, she moved to Baltimore to join WJZ-TV news • 1978 discovered her talent for hosting talk shows when she became co-host of WJZ-TV's "People Are Talking” • January 1984, moved to Chicago to host WLS-TV's "AM Chicago" • September “AM Chicago” renamed “Oprah Winferey Show” • First African American woman to become a billionaire Oprah as a little girl

  9. J.K. Rowling • Joanna Rowling is her real name. She is a British author, who has gained popularity through her Harry Potter series. She is a noted philanthropist. Movies have been made based on her book series. • British author best known as the creator of the Harry Potter fantasy series, the idea for which was conceived whilst on a train trip from Manchester to London in 1990. The Potter books have gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, sold more than 400 million copies, and been the basis for a popular series of films.

  10. Mother Theresa • was an Albanian Catholic nun with Indian citizenship who founded the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata (Calcutta), India in 1950. For over 45 years she ministered to the poor, sick, orphaned, and dying, while guiding the Missionaries of Charity's expansion, first throughout India and then in other countries. Following her death she was beatified by Pope John Paul II and given the title Blessed Teresa of Calcutta. • she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1980 for her humanitarian work. Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity continued to expand, and at the time of her death it was operating 610 missions in 123 countries, including hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis, soup kitchens, children's and family counselling programs, orphanages, and schools.

  11. Lady Diana, Princess of Wales • was the first wife of Charles, Prince of Wales. Her sons, Princes William and Harry, are second and third in line to the throne of the United Kingdom and fifteen other Commonwealth Realms. • a public figure from the announcement of her engagement to Prince Charles, Diana remained the focus of near-constant media scrutiny in the United Kingdom and around the world before, during and after her marriage, even in the years following her sudden death in a car crash, which was followed by a spontaneous and prolonged show of public mourning. • contemporary responses to Diana's life and legacy were mixed but a popular fascination with the Princess endures. The long-awaited Coroner's Inquest reported its conclusion on 7 April 2008 that Diana and her companion Dodi Fayed were unlawfully killed by the negligent driving of the following vehicles and also the driver Henri Paul of the vehicle in which she was travelling.

Audrey Hepburn • a British actress and humanitarian. • born in Ixelles, Belgium, Hepburn spent her childhood chiefly in the Netherlands, including German-occupiedArnhem, Netherlands, during the Second World War (1939-1945). She studied ballet in Arnhem and then moved to London in 1948, where she continued to train in ballet and worked as a photographer's model. She appeared in a handful of European films before starring in the 1951Broadway play Gigi. Hepburn played the lead female role in Roman Holiday(1953), winning an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for her performance. • Hepburn became one of the most successful film actresses in the world and performed with such notable leading men as Gregory Peck, Rex Harrison, Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Henry Fonda, William Holden, Fred Astaire, Peter O'Toole, and Albert Finney. She won BAFTA Awards for her performances in The Nun's Story (1959) and Charade (1963), and received Academy Award nominations for Sabrina(1954), The Nun's Story (1959), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) and Wait Until Dark (1967).

  13. Madonna • an American recording artist, actress and entrepreneur. Born in Bay City, Michigan, and raised in Rochester Hills, Michigan, she moved to New York City in 1977, for a career in modern dance. • a series of hit singles from her next studio albums, Like a Virgin (1984) and True Blue (1986), gained her global recognition. They established her as a pop icon, for pushing the boundaries of lyrical content in mainstream popular music and imagery in her music videos, which became a fixture on MTV. Her recognition was augmented by the film Desperately Seeking Susan (1985) which widely became seen as a Madonnavehicle, despite her not playing the lead. Expanding on the use of religious imagery with Like a Prayer (1989), Madonna received positive critical reception for her diverse musical productions, while at the same time was criticised by religious conservatives and the Vatican. • considered to be one of the most influential women in contemporary music, Madonna has been known for continually reinventing both her music and image, and for retaining a standard of autonomy within the recording industry. She is recognized as an influence among numerous music artists.
