Overview of Resources • Internet (evaluate web sites – remember TACO method ; truthfulness, authority, currency, objectivity) • Online databases • Science encyclopedias • Books related to science topic
Why Use Online Databases? • Quality, reliable information (Comes from print publications, books, newspapers, magazines, professional journals) • Provides a searchable interface for all of those resources • Will be required to use them again for History Day research
What are researching? • Answers to your research questions in your packet • Background information about the science or history connected to your topic – example history of battery • Information about a scientist that invented or discovered something related to your project • Example – inventor of battery
How to Access Online Databases On Salk Media Center Web page (linked from Salk School Home Page http://sms.elkriver.k12.mn.us) - Click on Online Databases link Need passwords to access from home (available in media center)
Which Ones to Use? Gale Inventions and Discoveries (use password for e-books, NOT Gale databases) EBSCO Science Reference Center Gale General Science Collection World Book Encyclopedia – Student edition Britannica Encyclopedia – (Highlighted in yellow on database page)
How to search? • Use keywords, not complete sentences or questions • When a good article related to search is found, use those same subject headings to find more like that one • Select full text before searching
How to cite? • Citations are done for you! • Select correct source card – different citations for different types of resources such as magazine, newspaper, encyclopedia • Just find the different elements needed for source cards • Example: author, title, name of database, etc.
