  1. Science Class Connect Rules • Respect the classroom and our privileges • Do not pollute the chat box • Stay on topic • Science class connects are not free chat sessions • Respect the teacher and your peers • Be appropriate and use good language • Be kind to others • Class connects are a time to learn • Have fun! • Science is cool and full of lots of fun lessons and labs! If you are unable to follow these three rules your privileges will be taken away!

  2. Unit 4 Lesson 4: Seafloor Geography • Agenda: • Identify features of the ocean floor. • Explain how ocean floor mapping helped explain continental drift

  3. What does the bottom of the ocean look like? How do we know?

  4. What is sonar? Sonar is a technique that uses sound to detect objects. What is bathymetric data? Data collected from measurement of the depths of oceans, seas, or other large bodies of water.

  5. How is sonar used? Sound waves are sent from the ship towards the ocean floor. When the sound hits something, it goes back to the ship.

  6. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline

  7. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline Continental Slope: sloping undersea land that is attached to shelf

  8. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline Continental Slope: sloping undersea land that is attached to shelf Continental Rise: undersea land between slope and main ocean floor

  9. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline Continental Slope: sloping undersea land that is attached to shelf Continental Rise: undersea land between slope and main ocean floor Abyssal Plain: flat area of the ocean floor

  10. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline Continental Slope: sloping undersea land that is attached to shelf Continental Rise: undersea land between slope and main ocean floor Abyssal Plain: flat area of the ocean floor Mid-Ocean Ridge: long raised area in the ocean with a valley along its top

  11. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline Continental Slope: sloping undersea land that is attached to shelf Continental Rise: undersea land between slope and main ocean floor Abyssal Plain: flat area of the ocean floor Mid-Ocean Ridge: long raised area in the ocean with a valley along its top Seamount: volcanic mountain that rises from the ocean floor and has its peak underwater

  12. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline Continental Slope: sloping undersea land that is attached to shelf Continental Rise: undersea land between slope and main ocean floor Abyssal Plain: flat area of the ocean floor Mid-Ocean Ridge: long raised area in the ocean with a valley along its top Guyot: a seamount with a flat top Seamount: volcanic mountain that rises from the ocean floor and has its peak underwater

  13. Continental Shelf: part of undersea land that extends from shoreline Submarine Canyon: a deep channel in the cont. shelf, slope, or rise Continental Slope: sloping undersea land that is attached to shelf Continental Rise: undersea land between slope and main ocean floor Abyssal Plain: flat area of the ocean floor Mid-Ocean Ridge: long raised area in the ocean with a valley along its top Guyot: a seamount with a flat top Seamount: volcanic mountain that rises from the ocean floor and has its peak underwater
