  1. CERN Pre-CommissioningMagnet Support Review BNL D1 Magnet Design, Pressures, Forces Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  2. Transverse Section of the D1 Magnet Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  3. Isometric View of D1 Transfer Lines Flex hose Bellows Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  4. Axial Thrust Loads • Bellows in transfer lines on the magnet are reacted by the cold mass itself. • Transfer lines and instrumentation line from cold mass to DFBX are connected using braided flex hoses in all cases; these produce no loads. • The only longitudinal pressure force applied to the cold mass posts is by the bellows for the m/c line (main bus leads) • Vacuum bellows forces are reacted to the floor through the cryostat. 5. Longitudinal Schematic Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  6. Flow Diagram for D1 in Test Bay Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  7. Cryogenic Testing • Pump & Purge • Cooldown I - 300 to 100 K • Cooldown II - 100 to 4.5 K • Test & Measure - 4.5 K • Quench Venting - if pressure exceeds 13.7 atm • Warmup - 4.5 to 300 K Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  8. Bus Bellows in Feed Can(has internal squirm can) Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  9. Bellows Forces(shared by two posts when cold) • By feed can bellows in test bay: • Bellows OD; ID = 3.032 [77mm]; 2.302 [58mm] • Pressure Area = 5.59 in2 [3606 mm2] • Force @ 13.7 bar = 1126 lbs. [5009 N] • By m/c bellows in ring installation: • Bellows OD; ID = 3.41 [87mm]; 2.92 [74mm] • Pressure Area = 7.87 in2 [5077 mm2] • Force @ 25 bar = 2893 lbs. [12,869 N] Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  10. Support Post Tests • Center post: minimum axial ultimate strength of 12,250 lbs with superimposed 3000 lb vertical weight of cold mass • End posts: 8870 lbs. axial ultimate strength • Strength of later posts was improved due to mold joint line changes and reduction of voids in the resin during molding Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab

  11. Conclusions • Magnet posts have been subjected to an unbalanced force that is approximately 40% of that which could be applied during 25 bar in situ test. However, posts have been subjected to strength testing far in excess of that force • Cold mass piping has been subjected to full pressure test force in warm condition Stephen Plate, Brookhaven National Lab
