  2. Outdoor Lighting Outdoor Lighting considerations have become nearly as important as those indoors. More and more people have expanded their living space to the outdoors, creating comfortable areas to entertain, relax and enjoy their yards. In doing so, lighting has become a vital component – for safety, security, and to highlight and beautify the home and garden. Today’s exterior lighting creates ambience for your outdoor activities and entertaining as well as adding safety to patios, decks and pathways and an element of security to your property.

  3. Outdoor Lighting • Even for outdoor lighting there are different types, some offering fashion, others strictly function. There are many choices for your outdoor lighting needs. Low-voltage outdoor lighting is a great option for under handrails, stairs and on decks to prevent tripping, and even to highlight landscaping. Spot lights help highlight or feature particular elements of your home or yard and stronger beams are necessary for outdoor activities such as basketball. Be sure there is adequate lighting to locate front and back entrances, your house number, the front walk, any steps and where visitors or family are getting in and out of cars. Outdoor lighting also helps with security of the home by deterring prowlers.

  4. Outdoor Lighting • Did you know that outdoor light fixtures where the light is projected downward reduces the glare and improves visibility? This is especially important for driveway areas and walkways. “Down lighting” is subtle and usually casts the area in a flattering light. Reducing glare also means that you can usually use fewer lights and less wattage. • The biggest problem in outdoor lighting tends to be understatement – or buying fixtures that are too small. Outdoor lanterns usually look about half the size they actually are when viewed from 50 feet away. When in doubt, always go larger. • Consider fixtures with sensors. Most will allow you to set how long they are on (dusk to dawn, 6 hours, 3, for example), how long they are on “bright” when motion is detected, and the duration of time the light stays on a higher power – 1 minute, 3 minutes 5 minutes., etc. These provide light where and when needed while extending the life of your light bulbs and being efficient.
