  4. Aims of the Virtual Tour • Extend and stimulating G & T student’s interest in history as a subject that they would want to chose to study at GCSE or pursue in their leisure time. • To develop a model of good ICT practice that could be developed and used by other departments within the school and possibly by other schools. • To produce an ICT package which could incorporate local history and help deliver the Yr. 7 National Curriculum for history.

  5. Aims of the Virtual Tour To Have Some Fun! • Develop the literacy, Oracy and presentational skills of the targeted group inline with the school’s development plan. • To produce a virtual text book that could be uploaded to the South Yorkshire e-Learning Project’s VLE which could then be downloaded by both students and teachers at other educational institutions within South Yorkshire. • To build up infrastructure of experience and hardware to enable the department to produce similar projects in the future.

  6. Objectives • 15 students from Yr. 9 were selected on the basis of their KS3 assessment data. • Permission was requested from parents to put them through an after school enrichment programme. • Specialist teachers were brought in to help teach the students how to edit digital images & film and use the digital cameras.

  7. Objectives • Mr Huggins delivered the enrichment course on Medieval history & castle building. • Students were also taught how to use some of the advanced features of PowerPoint.

  8. Objectives • The G & T students were given coaching on how to give public presentation. • They also studied a selection of Yr. 7 text books to analyse the reading age & ability of the targeted Yr. 7 audience.

  9. The Field Trip • The students were split up into three groups which were coordinated by a history specialist. • Each group looked at different aspects of the castle. • Building & Positioning. • Defences. • Life.

  10. The Field Trip • On the day of the trip the students went around the site with the tour guide before splitting up into their groups. • They then spent the rest of the morning planning & filming their aspects of the virtual tour. • We returned to school in time for lunch!

  11. Designing The Virtual Tour • In the afternoon we reconvened in the new study centre and began uploading and editing the pictures and video films onto the school’s network. • We used Windows Movie Maker to edit the film.

  12. Completing The Tour • It took a further six after school classes to finish off producing the tour. • The students decided to produce an observation sheet for each tour with differentiated tasks for the Yr. 7 students to complete.

  13. All but one of the G & T students opted for GCSE history Finalist in the BECTA ICT in Practice Awards Cost £300 to produce Improved students’ Oracy, Literacy & ICT skills Successful at helping to motivate SEN students. 14. I used to think that it was unfair that kids who misbehaved got to go on free trips to Alton Towers or the ice skating ring when we work hard and just get merit certificates.”
