  2. Today we will discuss Integrated Pest Management

  3. What is School IPM? • Asafer option for effective pest management in a school community. • Away to think and react to everyday pest management situations. • Acommitment to using safer, environmentally sensitive, sustainable control methods to keep facilities pest-free. • People working together for the common goal of safer environments for our children.

  4. Why implement IPM? • Reduces exposure to pests and pesticides • Delivers a healthier learning environment for our children • Creates a more effective, long-term control of pests • Decreases the number of pest complaints • Affords a lower cost for pest management because of a reduced number of pesticide applications • Promotes cooperation between staff • Fits together with other school environmental programs such as Energy Star and Indoor Air Quality

  5. Eight Steps to Follow in IPM • Develop a school IPM policy statement. • Designate pest management roles and appoint a School IPM Contact. • Set pest management objectives for each school site. • Conduct an inspection of each school room to identify pest issues.

  6. Eight Steps (Continued) • Monitor for signs of pest activity. • Set action thresholds. • Apply IPM strategies (sanitation and maintenance) to: • keep pests out • remove food and water sources • remove pests and take away their homes/harborages • 8. Evaluate your results and make adjustments, as necessary.

  7. Pest sightings: • Conduct daily inspections • Check “bug” monitors • Make sure staff knows to inform the IPM coordinator of any and all sightings of: – Corpses, shed skins, droppings, actual live insects or animals, damage, debris or urine stains.

  8. Remember: IPM in your School is everyone’s job. IPM works if staff is involved! If you see something, say something!

  9. Everyone has a role to play with pest control issues: • Report broken doors, leaky pipes and faucets, cracks in walls or windows. • Pick up clutter in your room. • Clean up - Don’t leave food, crumbs, candy and other items around. • Store food items in locking plastic containers. • Report /clean up food and drink spillages when they occur.
