  1. FEDEBEIS Panama & MLB United States style: • A CT 770 project spanning across cultures

  2. The Project... • Regional Popularity of the game of baseball! • MLB (Major League Baseball)... As if you didn’t already know!

  3. Presentation Focus • Differences in regional popularity between the MLB in Panama vs. the MLB in the United States.

  4. Beisbol in Panama • Panama baseball's U.S. debut: • Early 1900s. Backing Panamanian independence in 1903, also first year of the World Series, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt crafted a treaty to build the canal and create a 10-mile wide Canal Zone of sovereign American territory surrounding the waterway. Those born here would be considered as native-born U.S. citizens. • Construction began a year later and America's cultural stamp has been in the country ever since -- including baseball. • America maintained ownership over the canal until 1999. "America's Pastime" became "Panama's Pastime."

  5. Where the Panama fans cheer! • Fourteen stadiums are used in Panama to play baseball. However, they are also used to play other sports. The most known is that being Estadio Nacional, later renamed Rod Carew Stadium. It seats approximately 25,000 fans.

  7. Panamanian Fans • The baseball has been the most popular sport in Panama ever since….. • During the season, all people are interested in is the games results. Some enjoy games at the stadiums. Others, for distance or preference, watch on TV. All wear the color of their teams. • Everybody is familiar with the set-up of the league .

  8. Baseball & the United States • 1860s: The popularity of the sport inspired the semi & fully professional baseball clubs. • 1870s: American newspapers refer to baseball as the "National Pastime" or the "National Game." • 1871-1875: The first attempt at forming a "major league" produced the National Association. • 1876: The current National League was formed. • 1893: Minor Western League is formed. • 1901: After a series of rival leagues were organized but failed, the current American League is established.

  9. USA Fans • http://www.baseballfans.net/x/ • Baeball fans take their game seriously...real seriously • Not a myth, taking a road trip to see all 30 stadiums is an experience not just for the “out there” fans.

  10. Where the fans cheer! • New stadiums have translated to more than an additional 4 wins/year for their tenant ball clubs. 4 games is well within the margin that can make all the difference between a playoff team and an also-ran-  the boost translated the teams’ pre-stadium average of 80 wins (a .495 winning percentage over 162 games) to a post-stadium bump of 84 wins (.520). Miller Park Home of the Milwaukee Brewers!
