  3. Overview • Major causes of Fire • Fire prevention. • Choosing a Fire Extinguisher. • When to fight a fire. • How to use a fire extinguisher/P.A.S.S.

  4. What are major causes of fire? • Unattended cooking/candles • Smoking materials • Space heaters • Arson • Electrical shorts and overloading • Poor housekeeping • Flammable materials improperly stored

  5. What can you do to support fire prevention? • Know your procedures. • Practice exit drills. • Practice good housekeeping habits • Enforce “SMOKING” policy

  6. When to fight a fire! Fight the fire only if all the following are true: 1. Everyone has left or is being evacuated from the fire area. 2. The fire department has been called. 3. The fire is small and confined to the immediate area where it started. 4. You can fight the fire with your back to a safe escape route. 5. Your extinguisher is rated for the type of fire you are fighting and is in good working order. 6. You have had training and are confident that you can operate it effectively. If you have the slightest doubt about fighting the fire- DON’T. Close the door and get outside.

  7. Your extinguisher must fit the fire TYPE A: Ordinary combustibles. Wood, cloth, trash, paper, rubber, plastics and other common materials that burn easily. TYPE B: Flammable Liquids Gasoline, oil, grease, tar, oil-based paint, lacquer and flammable gas. TYPE C: Electrical equipment Energized electrical equipment, including wiring, fuse boxes, circuit breakers, machinery and applications. TYPE D: Combustible metals Magnesium is most common.

  8. How to use a fire extinguisher Check the condition of the extinguisher. Right type?, Needle in the green, pin secured in place. • P- Pull the pin. • A-Aim hose at hose base of fire. • S-Squeeze handle • S-Sweep back and forth at base of fire.
