  4. What is a Midrange Team? Who we think we are…

  5. Who we really are:

  6. Midrange Team Mission We support JHU and JHHS enterprise-class servers in support of both business-critical and patient-critical applications and services.

  7. What is Midrange? • Between microcomputers and the Mainframe computer systems

  8. Midrange Systems • Smaller Windows systems cost $2K-$15K • Mainframe systems cost $5-$100M. • Midrange systems generally cost between $10K and $1M. • Why use midrange? High-performance, high up-time, proven reliability, clustering/failover, and flexibility of applications.

  9. 3 Tier Architecture Tier 1 – Clients (Usually Windows Desktop Applications) Tier 2 – HTTP and/or Application Servers Tier 3 – Database Servers (Oracle, Cache, etc)

  10. Midrange Projects • Keane – Is the financial billing system for the Johns Hopkins Health System.  Effective December it also becomes the Inpatient registration system for the Johns Hopkins Hospital.  It replaces SMS Inpatient registration which runs on the mainframe.  • Service Center & SAP Shared Services Service Center – Are the problem reporting and change management system for IT@JH. • Patrol & UpTime – Monitor all midrange servers for problems and performance.  Keeps historical performance data and reports.  • SRM Chart Tracking – Medical records chart tracking system for JHH. • Tivoli TIMS/TAMOS & eTrust – These security products provide RACF style of security for almost all of our Midrange systems alerting us to intrusion and unauthorized actions. • Coeus – This is the grant system for The Johns Hopkins University.

  11. More projects… • Sympa - The Sympa system is used for enterprise wide mailing lists at JHH/JHU.  This system enables near instantaneous communications to a vast number of email recipients and is used extensively in Security bulletins, Class Scheduling, and Group Support Notifications. • Emtek - The Emtek system (formerly known as Eclipsys SCC) is in use by many of the ICUs for patient records, patient vitals data, and all aspects of the patient documentation effort within an ICU. • CRMS (Clinical Research Management System) The CRMS system is in place for use for all aspects of Clinical Research to include Oncology, Neurology, and others.  This system is also in use by outside entities in coordinated clinical research projects that Johns Hopkins has initiated. • Pathology - This system is currently being built and tested and is the upgrade to the system in use by the Pathology Lab for interfacing, controlling, monitoring, and obtaining results of the various and extremely complex test equipment in the Pathology Labs.

  12. More projects! • CommVault - These servers manage all CommVault backup jobs as they write to disk cache. • JHED – The Enterprise Directory application is responsible for all Hopkins user profiles, providing a central repository for user information, providing a basis for single-sign on, user lookups, authentication and authorization to access internal resources at Hopkins. • JHEM – The Enterprise Messaging environment holds accounts for over 40,000 users at the Institution. This is a highly available application, part of a redundant architecture designed to minimize downtime should a hardware component fail. This environment provides a high-performance, secure, web-based, POP, and IMAP access to e-mail, as well as a calendar application. • Sakai (Online Course Delivery) Sakai is in use by the ISIS group for online course content delivery to students enrolled within the Johns Hopkins University.

  13. Projects Galore! • SAP (Systems Applications and Products in Data Processing) - This enterprise wide software package is used for the University and Hospital.  It is divided into modules that include Financial Accounting, Controlling, Production Planning,  Materials Management and Sales and Distribution. • Interface Engine (Impact) - Handles inter-application messaging for hospital. Between test and production, there are almost 500 interfaces. Production processes over 2 million messages each day. • Autosys - CA scheduling application from CA. Like a super cron, the Autosys app schedules and executes commands for SAP and ISIS. • Pharmacy - GE Centricity application for requesting, processing, cross checking and distribution of medicines for patients throughout the hospital. • VPSX - an LRS print server application allow for centralized print management. This print server manages printers for Pharmacy, Keane, SAP, ISIS, Pathology and, soon, IDX.

  14. Lastly! • EPIC - outpatient scheduling system for JHH Bayview and remote clinics • EPIC Data Warehouse - maintains historic EPIC data providing reporting functions to users on trending data, etc. • ORMIS - Operating room management system provides resource management for the operating rooms at JHH and Bayview.
