  1. Group Summary Presentation “Beauty and the Beast of Advertising” Ms. Molla

Two- standard Grade • L.2.2.b: Deliver expository presentations Convey information and ideas from primary and secondary sources accurately and coherently • L.2.2.d: Deliver expository presentations Include visual aids by employing appropriate technology to organize and display information on charts, maps, and graphs

  3. Your Task: • With your group, you will present a clear and concise summary of the section you are assigned. • You will first outline your presentation/summary on a separate sheet of paper. • When approved, you will then work on your presentation on one of the computers. • Everyone should have a task or responsibility. • Nobody should be idle at any point!

  4. Requirements: • Title page: Section title, names, period, date. • Slide 1: Main Idea (one-two sentences). • Slide 2-6: Define confusing/difficult vocabulary • Slide 7: Main Points (5 bullet points). Your group will verbally explain these points • Slide 8-9: Quotes – Provide and explain meaning of assigned quotes. What is the deeper meaning? • Slide 10: Analysis: Provide your thoughts, opinions, agreement/disagreement with your section. What stood out? What was meaningful?

Sometimes they sell addictions.” • “Advertising creates a mythical, mostly white world in which people are rarely ugly, overweight, poor, struggling or disabled, either physically or mentally.”

  7. Housewives or Sex Objects • “Women are constantly exhorted to emulate this ideal, to feel ashamed and guilty if they fail, and to feel that their desirability and lovability are contingent upon physical perfection.”

  8. Creating Artificiality…Part 1 • “Beauty is something that comes from without…” • “Objectified constantly by others, she learns to objectify herself.”

  9. Creating Artificiality…part 2 • “We don’t expect boys to be that handsome. We take them as they are….but boys expect girls to be perfect and beautiful. And skinny.” • “If I had my way…every one of them would have to carry a line saying, ‘Caution: This model may be hazardous to your health.”

  10. Influencing Sexual Attitudes • “Advertising’s approach to sex is pornographic; it reduces people to objects and deemphasizes human contact and individuality.” • “There is the real tragedy, that many women internalize these stereotypes and learn their ‘limitations’….If one accepts these mythical and degrading images, to some extent one actualizes them.”
