What Is Addiction? • Addiction has been defined as physical and psychological dependence on psychoactive substances (for example alcohol, tobacco, heroin and other drugs) which cross the blood-brain barrier once ingested, temporarily altering the chemical milieu of the brain. • The state of being enslaved to a habit or practice or to something that is psychologically or physically habit-forming, as narcotics, to such an extent that its cessation causes severe trauma.

  4. Drugs Scheduling Opium • Schedule I: a category of drugs not considered legitimate for medical use. Heroin • Schedule II: a category of drugs considered to have a strong potential for abuse or addiction but that also have legitimate medical use.

Drug Scheduling cont. • Schedule V: a medically useful category of drugs that have less potential for abuse or addiction than those of Schedules I through IV. • Schedule III: a category of drugs that have less potential for abuse or addiction than Schedule I or II drugs and have a useful medical purpose. • Schedule IV: a medically useful category of drugs that have less potential for abuse or addiction than those of Schedules I, II, and III. amphetamines

Signs and Symptoms of Drug Addiction • You’ve built up a drug tolerance. • You take drugs to avoid or relieve withdrawal symptoms. • You’ve lost control over your drug use. • Your life revolves around drug use. • You’ve abandoned activities you used to enjoy. • You continue to use drugs, despite knowing it’s hurting you.

  7. Smoking Addiction • Nicotine is what causes addiction. • Smokers develop tolerance to nicotine • They can take higher doses without feeling sick

  8. Smoking Facts • Scientists claim the average smoker will lose 14 years of their life due to smoking. • Nicotine reaches the brain within 10 seconds after smoke is inhaled. • 6.3 trillion cigarettes will be produced by tobacco companies in 2010.

  9. Signs and Symptoms of Smoking • Efforts to Quit Smoking go Waste • Experience Withdrawal Symptoms • Illness don’t Prevent you from Smoking • Avoid Certain Places and People • Crave to Smoke at Specific Time and Place

  10. Drinking Addiction • Alcoholism = shows signs of physical addiction to alcohol • The amount of alcohol one drinks can influence the likelihood of becoming dependent It’s Cool I’m Drunk

  11. Alcohol Facts • The level of blood alcohol content (BAC) is what determines sobriety or intoxication. • Only time can sober up a person • Women are affected more rapidly

  12. Risk Factors and Signs Why?? • Men who have 15 or more drinks a week • Women who have 12 or more drinks a week • Hostility when confronted about drinking • Need for daily or regular alcohol use to function • Secretive behavior to hide alcohol use • Making excuses to drink

  13. Internet and Gaming Addiction • Internet addiction disorder = excessive computer use that interferes with daily life. • Video game addiction = excessive or compulsive use of computer and video games that interferes with daily life. I have 1,300 Facebook friends I’m the King of Donkey Kong

  14. Gambling Addiction • Gambling addiction = Can’t control the impulse to gamble • Their gambling is hurting themselves or their loved ones

  15. Signs and Symptoms of Gambling Addiction • You might gamble in secret or lie about how much you gamble • Once you start gambling, can you walk away? • A red flag is when you are getting more and more desperate to recoup your losses. • Denial keeps problem gambling going.

  16. Sex Addiction • Sexual addiction = sexual urges, behaviors, or thoughts that appear extreme in frequency or feel out of one's control. • Sexologists have not reached any consensus • Sexual addiction = (but is not always) associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  17. Signs and Symptoms of Sex Addiction • Multiple affairs (extra-marital affairs) • Consistent use of pornography • Compulsive masturbation (self-stimulation) • Voyeurism (watching others) and/or stalking • Prostitution or use of prostitutes • Unsafe sex
