Endeavor makes woman a better engineer!

This article explores the experiences of a female engineer working in the laboratory at XIHARI, the China National Quality Supervision & Inspection Testing Center for high voltage apparatus. It discusses the challenges and successes of balancing work, marriage, and motherhood, and showcases the determination and perseverance required to excel in a male-dominated field.

  1. Endeavor makes woman a better engineer! Ye XUE Xi’an High Voltage Apparatus Research Institute Co. Ltd 24.9.2015

  2. This is the Laboratory of XIHARI.

  3. XIHARI is the China National Quality Supervision &Inspection Testing Center for high voltage apparatus, insulator and surge arrester, power capacitor as well as intelligent electrical apparatus.

  4. XIHARI also undertakes the national industry standardization and information service on the field above. XIHARI also takes part in many international organizations such as CIGRE, IEC, STL and so on.

  5. Since I graduated from university at July 1988, I had worked in the XIHARI Lab for 17 years. Before 2000, I acted as a measurement engineer in High Power Lab for 12 years.

  6. In the high power Lab, The Voltage & current signals of short circuit test sampled by Voltage divider or PT and CT or shunt, and then obtained by the oscilloscope. At that time, computer aided measurement system were not common used yet. We measured the power frequency signal used the light oscilloscope and the TRV(Transient Recovery Voltage) used the mechanical scanning oscilloscope, which by use of high-speed rotating photography to obtain the wave. So, adjusting the position of oscillator of light oscilloscope and developing the photograph of TRV were our daily works.

  7. So, after 1995, when the computer aided measurement system had been developed and used step by step, the light oscilloscope and mechanical scanning oscilloscope disappeared. We very glad we were liberated from the tedious works: using the ruler to measure the amplitude of wave to get the test data and developing the photograph every day. • Science and technology changed our routine work obviously.

  8. It is a very common thing to work overtime as an engineer in the laboratory. BALANCE • But as a female, I also need to play roles both as the wife and mother and a female engineer. • So how to balance these two kinds of role is a common problem for all of us.

  9. STRORY 1 • One in the Japanese group said to me that the married woman especially who is pregnant did not work anymore in Japan, and the DC power inside the oscillator may be harmful to your baby. TIME: Summer in 1991 High Power Lab Laboratory Place: pregnant Condition:

  10. My answer • I deeply know that, as a female engineer, we should overcome more difficulties and make more efforts than the others. • first of all, I am surely a woman, but I am a professional engineer in measurement filed, this is my duty; • Secondly, if I take the special insulated tool and have a right procedure, there would be no problem

  11. STRORY 2 Object: 3 phases 35 kV PT Destructive test test Condition: Problem: no signal • After workers dismantled 3 phases PT and finished the dry processes, they were reinstalled under the instructions of a male engineer. When test beginning, the wave of 3 phases test voltage were lost in the loop check test. The test must be breakdown.

  12. As we know, the short-circuit test sometime is destructive test. So, if one of the measuring signals is not get, it will be a serious accident. • Though I didn't on duty that day, as the leader of measuring group, I got up the plat of test loop to check the wiring of PT carefully and corrected the mistakes, which guaranteed the completed of the test plans on that day. From then on, once the measurement equipment had been moved I must check the wiring by myself. • As a engineer, responsibility • must be always in her mind

  13. As the engineer, you must have a strong handwork ability even though you are women. Because some of the instruments and devices are not standard products, we can't get them from the market or too expensive to get them. We must make them by our self

  14. In research work, work overtime is very often. Because the laboratory would be closed after working hours, there are several times I was kept in the room because of the concentration for subjects study.

  15. In brief, engineer is a hard work, but full of pleasure and achievement as well. The years of engineer career make endeavor and continuous learning become such normal for me, so that I never fall behind even when I was having courses of master degree with classmates more than ten years younger than me.

  16. From feb.2005, I acted as the director of technical information department of XIHARI,also served as the chief editor of High Voltage Apparatus (GAOYA DIANQI). • At the same time, I presided translating and edit over 10s of technological collected works about high voltage switches. • Since 2013, I have focused on managing three technological journals

  17. I act as the chief editor of the journal High Voltage Apparatus. High Voltage Apparatus

  18. Insulators and Surge Arresters

  19. Power Capacitor & Reactive Power Compensation

  20. Although I am not the front line engineer any more, managing technological journals gave me more chances to contact with many female professors, female experts, and other female engineers. Their stories of endeavor and spirits of struggle for work also encouraged me all the time.

  21. Taking this opportunity, I earnestly hope all of you present give our journals more support. Now they are all the Chinese core journals • We also hope these journals will be the platform and become helpful for all the female engineers to share their academic achievements. I believe, Endeavor makes woman a better engineer!

  22. Finally, if you are interested in our journals, please touch me. • That is all My Tel: 18681836696. E-mail: Xueye@xihari.com Thanks!
