  1. Stop Vision Loss Early—go for a Glaucoma Surgery What is Glaucoma? Glaucoma is usually referred to as a cluster of eye diseases that destroys the optic nerve, the nerve of our eye. The optic nerve is required for transmitting signals from the retina towards brain which are then interpreted and aid us in our vision. The optic nerve along with the lens, retina, and the brain help in forming and understanding the image that our eyes see, and so its health is vital for our vision. How does it happen and how common is it? It occurs when there is more pressure on our optic nerve than there is normally. This increased pressure can be attributed to the increased pressure in the front part of the eye because of extra fluid build-up. This extra fluid presses on to the optic nerve and if the pressure increases greatly it can cause damage to the nerve. Glaucoma is very common. Even though it can occur in a person of any age group, it is most common in people over the age of 60. It is the leading cause of blindness in them. More than 1 million people need to undergo glaucoma eye surgery every year in India. Why is Glaucoma so severe? Glaucoma even though very common often can go undetected. This is because most forms of glaucoma have almost no kind of symptoms at all. The affected person can even lose his vision, but the change is so gradual that it goes undetected until the advanced stages. Most people are able to detect and then undergo glaucoma eye surgery only at their advanced stages. The vision loss that is caused because of glaucoma cannot be reverted. It is there important to go for an eye check-up and test your eye pressure regularly. Procedures like the glaucoma eye surgery are some complex procedures. It is therefore advisable to consult the best doctors in the town, say the best eye specialist in Mumbai for that matter. If detected early vision loss can be minimized, and so going for eye check-up is advisable.
