  2. Understanding the Wire Rope • Wire rope is a working a machine made up of many moving parts (illustrated below). • Like any machine, the wire rope requires consistent maintenance and proper care to remain in tact and functionally efficient. The Importance of Lubrication in Wire Ropes • The strands that make up a wire rope are under constant stress and strain when in operation. • The strands continuously rub together causing friction. • The friction cause strands to wear. • The heat from the friction causes oxidation and higher internal core temperatures which results in accelerated rusting and premature rope failure. Proper lubrication will alleviate friction, thus allowing for a full and lasting functional lifespan of the rope. Furthermore a lubricant is used to provide corrosion protection.

  3. Lubricating the Cable When lubricating a wire rope, it is necessary to apply lubricant to every part of the rope, as every part is in motion and under pressure when performing work. This includes the core of the rope, which as discussed, is surrounded by several strands made up of a number of wire threads. • Most wire ropes fail from the inside, it is important to lubricate that center core. • The most common forms of wire rope lubrication includes the thick coating to the external part of the rope. • What does this type of cable lubrication do for the most important part of the cable, that is the core?

  4. Lubrication Methods Typical/Common Cable Lubrication • Thick grease-based or asphaltic-based products are used to coat the external surface of the rope • Brushes are used to apply lubricant • This only covers the exposed strands, not the core strands to which provide the most important function. • In order to reach the core of the cable rope with heavy grease lubricant, expensive and labor intensive application systems are required. • Grease-based coatings tend to be sticky allowing airborne particles to accumulate to the rope. • Thick coatings can hide rope damage during visual inspection.

  5. Lubrication Methods • Vitalife® Lubrication • A light oil, which when applied coats the ropes exterior and then penetrates and spreads throughout the ropes strands all the way into and throughout the ropes core. Providing even lubrication throughout the entire rope. • Applied as a spray (no brush required) A VIT LIFE ®

  6. Benefits of Vitalife® • Vitalife wire rope lubricants are made to extend wire rope life. • Penetrates to core • Inner strand preservation and lubricity • Reduces friction between the strands of wire rope. • Dry to touch and does not collect air particles (non-tacky) • Cleans wire rope during application • Oxidation control • Coats each individual strand • Protects against rust and corrosion • Self healing • Inexpensive and less labor intensive in comparison to other wire rope lubricates with more efficient lubrication of all rope strands. • Allows for easy rope inspection • Extends rope life

  7. Vitalife® Products Vitalife®BIO LUBE • Environmentally friendly. • Non-toxic. • From the highest quality biodegradable base fluids. • Same applications as Vitalife® 400. Vitalife® 400 • General Purpose Lubricant. • Penetrates to the core of the rope and lubricates every strand. • Perfect for applications such as bridges, cranes, draglines, and mining. • Also can be used for tramways, cableways, escalators, derricks, masts, hoist ropes, conveyors, and material handling equipment. • Vitalife® 600 • Developed exclusively for elevator cable re-lubrication and maintenance. Vitalife® 500 • Developed exclusively for ski lifts and tramways. • Won’t harm rubber, neoprene sheave liners or bull rings. • Non-staining formula adheres to surface without drop off.

  8. Side By Side Comparison Penetrating Wire Rope Lubricant Pictured below is the Brooklyn Bridge, Lubricated with Vitalife®since 1895 (see next slide). Grease-Based Wire Rope Lubricant

  9. Vitalife®Historical Snapshot The Vitalife® product dates back to The Brooklyn Bridge. J.A. Roebling, who supplied the rope for the bridge in the late 1890’s, co-developed a lubricant designed to protect the cables of the bridge with AOSI. In the 1940’s American Oil and Supply acquired the Vitalife® brand of wire rope lubricants. AOSI has taken the original technology and application know how and has improved on it, developing the most technically sophisticated wire rope lubricants in the world. Vitalife® is still used to lubricate the Brooklyn Bridge to date.

  10. Add Quality to Innovation • Vitalife® is made from the high quality base oil, uses only top quality additives, and a state of the art manufacturing process is used in its production to make a lubricant that performs well under a variety of environments and applications. • AOSI manufacturing facilities are ISO 9001/2000-certified. A VIT LIFE ® WIRE ROPE LUBRICANT • The Vitalife® Brand of wire rope lubricants have been utilized since the late 1890’s and is the original standard recognized for its dependability.
