  2. What caused the Battle of Marathon? • The Greek city-states sent troops to fight Darius in Asia, making him swear revenge!

  3. What were the effects of the Battle of Marathon? • The Greeks won the battle. Xerxes wanted a rematch to avenge his father!

  4. What caused the Battle of Thermopylae? • Xerxes wanted a rematch to avenge his father! • A Greek soldier betrays the Greeks

  5. What were the effects of the Battle of Thermopylae? • The Persians surround the Greeks and win! • Athens is burned • The Greeks are motivated to fight back
