  2. History of Immigration • America is the melting pot of the world. • The first time a group of people came to the Untied States was the pilgrims in 1600. • The Pilgrims came for religious freedom • Continues to be a main reason

History of Immigration cont. • The next time wave of immigration was during the time that the colonists started to settle here. • The reason that the colonist came was because of their need for religious freedom, economic prosperity, and escape criminal prosecution. • Around 1830: there was a large scale immigration from Britain, Ireland, and Germany.

Timeline • 1790 – 1820: • English settlers comprised 60 percent of the U.S. citizenry • A large amount of white immigrant • 1820 - 1860 • About 40 percent of the immigrants from the second wave came from Ireland. • 1880 – 1914 • Immigrants came over to America for more job opportunities and freedom of religion. • foreign-born residents made up 15 percent of the U.S. population and 24 percent of the U.S. labor force. • 1965 – Present • Asians made up about one-third of the immigrants entering America. • Hispanics made up about one-half of the number of immigrants in the 1980s and early 1990s.

  5. History of Immigration cont. • Between 1849-1853 about 24,000 Chinese men moved to California. • This time period was one of the biggest times that racism was present in the United States. • The Chinese immigrants were one of the most unwelcomed immigrant groups ever.

  6. Laws-Hurt or Help? • Alien and Sedition act of 1798- hurt by increasing requirement from five to fourteen years • 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act- hurt by excluding Chinese immigrants from social and economic opportunities • 1990 Immigration and Nationality Act--help by providing administrative naturalization, and for other purposes

  7. Today’s Concerns • In the United States today, illegal immigration is more of an issue than legal immigration. • Some argue that it is because of illegal immigrants that our economy is in such a bad shape. • Another argument is that illegal immigrants take jobs away from American citizens.

Today’s Concerns cont. • In Arizona about a year ago, there was a huge issue concerning the illegal Mexican immigrants. • As a result Arizona legislature attempted to pass a law to close the Arizona border. • This did not pass, but it caused a lot of attention to the issue of illegal immigrants.

  9. Democrats • believes in the diversity of the United States. • However , they recognize that there is an issue with the system and something needs to be improved. • Major concern: college for immigrants • Democrats believe that an immigrants child should have access to the available college funds.

  10. Republican • believe that more resources should go toward border control. • the immigration system is structured to address the needs of national security. • Republicans also believe that an immigrants child should not have access to the available college funds.

  11. Green Party • believes that immigrants should not be entirely blamed for the economic problems. • undocumented immigrants should be given a chance to become citizens. • border relations should be a central concern of our government to improve the economic opportunities, and social conditions for both peoples.

  12. Mass Media • The Huffington Post • states that Republicans are becoming more lenient in an attempt to secure more of the Latino vote. • Google News • Republicans don’t support the fact that illegal immigrants are being allowed to pay in-state tuition for colleges

  13. Mass Media cont. • The Star-Telegram presents the issue of immigration in a very interesting way. • -- immigration is shown as a problem that needs to be resolved • -- immigrants want to be in his country so much we as Americans think it is okay to exploit them for our own selfish needs.

  14. Importance of this Immigration Immigration brings diversity to the United States. Without immigration the United States would not be the same today. Without immigration, the United States would not even exist today.
