  2. 1160: The Notre Dame’s construction begins by the newly named Bishop of Paris, Maurice de Sully (originally made for his own personal reasons) • 1196: Bishop Maurice de Sully, dies and the construction is picked up by Bishop Eudes de Sully • 1200-1225: Western façade of the cathedral is completed • 1250-1260s: Western towers and north rose window completed..1245–1260s Transepts remodeled in the Rayonnant style by Jean de Chelles then Pierre de Montreuil. • 1345: New finishing touches are applied including a new transept laid across the middle section.   4. The history of this momentous construction, although, had not been unscathed. In 1548, rioting Huguenots damage features of the cathedral finding them idolatrous. The cathedral had to experience a complete makeover to strengthen its pillars and protection Remodeling and desecration

  6. This attempt however was ineffective during the French revolution, in the 1790s. Radicals desecrated religious figures and monuments in France, The Notre Dame Cathedral being a victim of this torture. The statues of the biblical kings of Judah located on the edge of the Cathedral were beheaded. The irony of this destruction is that the heads were mistaken for the former leaders of France and not biblical figures.

  8. The glass windows are one of the most notable features of the Notre Dame. Sadly during World War II, stained glass windows had suffered damage from stray bullets and artillery shrapnel. Some of the original pictures were replaced with geometrical patterns because they were unsalvagable.
