  1. What are the different kinds of Observational Research?

  2. Bell Ringer • How do you think psychologists collect information for studies? • If you wanted to conduct a study how would you go about it?

  3. Case Study • Study one or a few individuals in great depth in hope of revealing tings true of us all. • -Strength: can be very revealing and suggest hypothesis for further research • -Weakness: Can be misleading. Individual may be atypical. Anecdotal cases (dramatic stories, personal experiences etc) can overwhelm general truths

  4. Survey • Looks at many cases with less depth. Asks people to report their behavior or opinions • -Wording effects: subtle changes in the order or wording of questions can have major effects • -Sampling: Need a random representative sample (not a narrow, specific sample)

  5. Naturalistic Observation • Watching and recording the behavior of organisms in their natural environment. Does not explain behavior…describes it.

  6. Participant Observation • Form of naturalistic observation. Researcher describes behavior in the natural environment but does so as a participant of the group being studied. • -Strength: allows researchers to get closer to what they are studying and people don’t act differently around the researcher (undercover cop)

  7. HW: Read articles A-D and answer questions attached
