  1. CSGN Woodland Creation Programme An Introduction by Julie Paton CSGN Woodland Creation Programme Manager

  2. Purpose: Stimulate 500 Ha of new woodland creation in the CSGN area over the initial 2 years of the project

  3. CSGN Woodland Creation Programme will deliver key milestones of CSGN Work Plan (2012 - 2015) • Develop a CSGN Woodland Creation Action Plan which draws together key elements of regional Forestry & Woodland Strategies and addresses key barriers to woodland creation. • Identify and investigate new and innovative mechanisms for woodland creation. • Achieve a step change in the rate of woodland creation (compared to 2010 baseline).

  4. New post funded by FCS commenced in Sept 2012 • First Steps… • meeting CSGN partners and getting to grips with the area • exploring previous initiatives and lessons learnt • scoping barriers and opportunities • establishing CSGN Woodland Expansion Steering Group

  5. Programme Manager role – work at strategic level looking at mechanics of woodland creation and scope out opportunities for delivery through local partnerships and bodies. Will be directed by Scottish Forestry Strategy and influenced by the work of WEAG. Will contribute to the vision of CSGN as “A high-quality ‘green network’ that will meet environmental, social and economic goals designed to improve peoples lives, promote economic success, allow nature to flourish and help Scotland respond to the challenge of climate change.”

  6. Land Use & Constraints

  7. Produce composite GIS dataset of all CSGN Area Forest & Woodland Strategies. Supplement with additional social/environmental data to identify priority areas across region. • Inform strategic overview – allow scoping of opportunities for delivery and support the development of new initiatives on the ground. • Collate 2010 Baseline data on woodland cover, production forecasting, employment and the economic impact of forestry to measure future progress against.

  8. Funding Woodland Creation Input to existing mechanisms… • Develop new additional contributions model for the CSGN area in SRDP#2 to further incentivise appropriate planting at preferred locations (Agenda Item). Investigate new mechanisms… • Commission work on new mechanisms to support woodland creation (fiscal, carbon sequestration, leasing etc).

  9. Commission study into farm forestry in CSGN area to bring out key issues and opportunities. • Look at barriers to different types of woodland creation and address with positive examples. Develop case studies and demonstration sites to promote local examples and bring people to them – develop networks to build interest, confidence and skill base amongst land managers. • Identify and investigate priority V&DL locations for planting.

  10. Indicative work programme mapped out – seeks to retain some flexibility to respond to new developments as they arise. Delivery ‘in-house’, through existing partnerships, local contacts and knowledge and appointed contractors. Working out of Central Scotland Conservancy but keeping in touch with other Conservancies, Scottish Lowlands Forest District, FCS National Office and CSGN Support Unit. Funded to August 2014.
