1. Solving Rational Equations This is a Proportion, cross multiply to solve. When solving a rational equation, you must consider the excluded values because they will make the fraction become undefined.
1. Solving Rational Equations EXTRANOUS SOLUTION: This solution is included in the excluded values which means that it will make the fraction undefined and therefore, cannot be used as a solution to the equation.
Check x = 3 Check x = -4 Undefined!
2. Solving Rational Equations Find LCD and subtract. Cross multiply to solve the proportion.
2. Solving Rational Equations Excluded Value
3. Solving Rational Equations LCD Method Multiply both sides of the equation by the LCD of entire equation.
4. Solving Rational Equations Excluded Value: LCD: (x+1)
4. Solving Rational Equations Check: Zero in the denominator makes the number undefined, therefore this equation has NO SOLUTION!
5. Solving Rational Equations Factor: (x+2)(x-2) Excluded Value: LCD: (x + 2)(x - 2)
