  4. Senior ROTC Program • Mission: Recruit, Educate and Commission Officer Candidates • Located at 144 detachments – US and Puerto Rico • 1000+ cross-town schools • Enroll in AF classes just like other college courses • Classes part of Department of Aerospace Studies

Detachment 365 Highlights • Det 365 hosted by MIT since 1949 • Cross-town schools: Harvard, Tufts, Wellesley, Salem State, Gordon, Endicott • 36 total cadets • Staff: • Professor of Aerospace Studies (PAS) • 2 Assistant PAS • 3 Admin Support – 2 NCOs & 1 MIT employee • Tri-service component w/Army and Navy

ROTC Life: 4-year Program • General Military Course (GMC) – First 2 years • Freshmen and sophomores • 1-hour AS class and 2-hour LLAB each week • Physical Training – 2 times per week • Professional Officer Course (POC) – Last 2 years • Juniors and above • Conduct LLAB and manage the corps • 3-hours of AS class and 2-hour LLAB each week • Physical Training – 2 times per week • Competitive for selection – Based on GPA, PFT, AFOQT, FT • Receive stipend

  8. ROTC Life: Aerospace Classes Classes Taken both Fall and Spring terms • AS 100 – Intro to USAF(1 Hr/week) • AS 200 – AF Doctrine & History(1 Hr/week) • AS 300 – Leadership & Management (3 Hrs/week) • AS 400 – Foreign Policy & Preparation for Active Duty (3 Hrs/week)

ROTC Life: Leadership Lab (LLAB) • Cadet-run program • Planned, organized and taught by POC • Under Cadre supervision • Tri-service activities with Navy and Army • Military Ball, Field Day, Commissioning Ceremonies • Focus for each year • AS 100: Uniform wear, Basic drill, Group leadership problems • AS 200: Preparation for field training • AS 300: Practice new POC skills, Flying slots • AS 400: Manage cadet corps, Receive AD assignments

ROTC Life: Optional Summer Juniors • Operation Air Force – Officer shadowing program, 3 weeks • Operation Air Force – OSI • Army Airborne Training – 24 days – parachutist rating • Field Engineering and Readiness Lab * – Civil Eng, 5 weeks • Nurse Orientation Program – 4 weeks, Wilford Hall • Foreign Language Immersion – Various, 2-4 weeks • Cadet Training Assistant (CTA) – $2,000 scholarship • Advanced Course in Engineering – 12 weeks, Cyber security boot camp • NASA Engineering Research Experience (NERE) – 4 or 9 weeks, Johnson Space Center • Cadet Laboratory Experience Program (CLEP) – Lawrence Livermore Labs, 8 weeks • Space Operations – Satellite Operations, 2 weeks, USAFA * Secret Clearance required

Scholarship Overview • High School Scholarship Program (HSSP) • High school seniors only • 3 and 4-year offers • In-College Scholarship Programs (ICSP) • Already in college • Competitive programs - Phases I, II, III • Also a chance to upgrade to 80% and 100% of tuition • In-College Leadership Scholarship – 3.5 yr, Type 1 or 2 • Fully-qualified: Express Scholarships • Nursing (‘11, ‘10) • Foreign Language (‘11, ‘10) • Computer and Electrical Engineering (‘11, ‘10) • Environmental Engineering (’11, ‘10) Please note that these are subject to change based on AF needs and funding!

High School Scholarship Program (HSSP) • Four-year scholarship offers to high school seniors • Majority in technical majors • Excel in AP/Honors coursework • Strong leadership potential & communication skills • Competitively selected by central board • Permits applicants to select university • Scholarship offer made for a technical or non-technical major

HSSP Eligibility Requirements • Academic Requirements: • ACT/SAT 24/1100 • High School GPA 3.0 • High School Graduate or equivalent • May take the PAE (USAFA fitness test) • U.S. Citizen, 17+ years old (commission before 31) • No full-time college (except HS/College programs) • Can not be a single parent (though waivers available) • Be medically qualified as determined by Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB)

  22. HSSP FY07 Selection Cycle • 11,442 applicants • 3,088 eligible (27%) • 1,726 offers (54%) - 66% technical, 3% language • 8% - Full tuition scholarship (Type 1) • 25% - $15K/year (Type 2) • Average scores • 1231 SAT, 27 ACT, 3.7 GPA, top 14% RIC

Scholarship Tiers • Tier 1 – Electrical, environmental and computer engineering • Tier 2 – Specific engineering: aeronautical, aerospace, architectural, astronautical, civil and mechanical & meteorology • Tier 3 – Architecture, chemistry, math, physics, computer science, operations research, and other ABET-accredited engineering majors • Tier 4 – All others • Tier 5 – Foreign languages

ROTC Life: GMC Eligibility • Enrolled full-time student • Participate in both the Aerospace Studies class and Leadership Lab each semester • Be age 14 or older • Minimum age for enlistment is 17 • Minimum age for commissioning is 18 • Maximum commissioning age is 31 • Be of good moral character

ROTC Life: POC Eligibility • Meet all qualifications for the General Military Course • United States citizen • 18 years old (17 years old with a parent/guardian consent) • Physically qualified – Pass Physical Fitness Test • Pass DODMERB • Pass the AF Officer Qualifying Test • Interviewed and selected by a board of Air Force officers • Complete Field Training • Complete all graduation and commissioning requirements • Obligated to the AF Reserve
