When a man is married to more than one woman at a time, it is termed as polygamy, and when a woman is married to more than one man at one particular time, is termed to be polyandry. Bigamy is the act where a person who is already married, marries another. Organizations around the world have often described polygamy as a human rights abuse. The United Nations Human Rights Committee considered polygamy to be violating the dignity of women and hence against various international covenants. Polygamy was always practiced in ancient India but whether or not it was popular in public opinion is doubtful. Those of higher social and economic stature usually performed it. If ancient Indian history is studied, it is seen that the rich and the powerful practiced polygamy, while the...show more content... He then eloped with a woman named Deepa after three years. Polygamy Is Polygamy Socially Acceptable? The reality TV show Sister Wives follows the lives of a polygamist family of 22. The husband, Cody Brown, has 4 wives: Meri, Janelle, Christine, and the latest addition Robyn. The number of polygamists in North America, estimated at 50,000 or more, is doubling every decade. Polygamy by definition is a marriage that includes more than two partners. When a man is married to more than one woman at the same time it is called polygany and when a woman is married to more than one man at the same time it is called polyandry. Polygamy is not a new practice, in fact it has been going on for centuries. However, with recent growing publicity from shows like Sister Wives, more and more people are becoming aware of...show more content... However, if a woman agrees to marry into such a family she should be prepared for these feelings. It has also been said that polygamy undermines the institution of marriage and the idea of devotion and giving oneself wholly to their spouse. It is not possible for one man to give himself wholly to four different women which means each wife is really only married to one fourth of a man. The husband is often accused of being selfish and greedy because he is not satisfied with his family and he feels the need to go out and find another new woman and more children to add to it. Polygamy also has many negative effects on the children. Often times the wives will be upset and in a bad mood because they are missing the husband or are jealous for some reason and the kids suffer from it. Also it is hard for the children to make friends when they know about there lifestyle. Perhaps some of the kids don't believe in this lifestyle and don't want to be a part of it, well they don't have a choice until they are of age. The practice of polygamy is a very controversial topic and many people disagree with it but all and all America is a free country and if people choose to live this way than that is their choice and no one should be able to take that away from them. As long as they are not negatively ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
Polygamy Essay When someone "pops the question", he is normally knelt on one knee, the paradigm of a prince charming. The illusion is shattered when the proposal is not solely performed to one woman, but many. Then, it is not just one bride. It is one of an array of brides. Polygamy, obviously, still exists today. Though no religion mandates it, and it is, in fact, illegal in the United States, it is still a realized phenomenon. Popular occidental culture has veered away from this marriage style. Now a day, a typical westerner prefers monogamy. The emphasis is on the couple, not the several. Both essays, My Husband's Nine Wives by Elizabeth Joseph and In Defense of Polygamy by B. Aisha Lemu, depict different situations involving polygamy, through a...show more content... The whole situation is beneficial for all participants. This might seem appealing to some working women who juggle children, work, and a spouse. The question still remains, however, what happens when the working woman returns home? The regular tradition of dinner might be kept intact, along with the dishwashing, and after dinner television time. The routine deviates from the normal when it comes time to hit the proverbial sack. Do the math, one husband, many wives, and one main bed. How does this special time and place get divided up? "Sleeping hours" are previously "booked" by the wives. This amounts to an equitable way of passing the husband around. In addition, sometimes, claims Joseph, "with the demands of career and the literal chasing after the needs of a toddler, all I want to do is collapse into bed and sleep" (770). Therefore, busy and exhausted, wife A can choose to be with her husband on the days when she is least busy, and not feel obliged to meet her husbands needs when she would rather pass out. In this way, Joseph seems to successfully argue the case of polygamy. Joseph presents the reader with a picture of a functional polygamous family. There is a definite mother and father presence, a set routine and even marital bliss. I cannot envision this unraveling quite so ideally in actual practice. On paper, because ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

Essay On Polygamy Polygamy Should Be Legalized in The United States Should polygamy be legalized in United States? Love and marriage is traditionally defined by the union of two people. However, one may argue that there are overwhelming benefits of a nontraditional marriage. It's often quoted that it takes a village to raise a child, not just one mother and one father in a household. This view is supported within polygamy. Polygamy is defined as "A marriage in which a spouse of either sex may have more than one mate at the same time" (Marriam– Webster). This practice of polygamy goes back for most of man's recorded history and is mentioned in most major religions. Even though most religions do not practice polygamy anymore it is still apart the Islamic and Mormon doctrine. It is illegal in the United States to marry someone while still lawfully married to another person. The outlaw of polygamy is a violation of a citizen's Constitutional right to practice their religion. For those who currently practice outside the law, this creates a constitutional midpoint where they may be imprisoned for exercising their rights. Although it may be illegal in the United States, polygamy is a principle aspect of several religions; it supports women and children and it helps reduce the number of unmarried women. The First Amendment of the United States gives citizens the freedom to practice religion and freedom of speech. As human beings we should have the right to practice our religious beliefs without fear ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
Polygamy Essay Polygamy is the practice of having more than one spouse and is culturally accepted in many parts of the world, but is illegal in the United States. There are two well known forms of polygamy, both of which are still presently practiced in numerous cultures globally, polygyny and polyandry. These practices take place in societies where it is important to have either more men or more women in a families' household based on the kind of environment they reside in. This paper is going to take a look at who practices polygamy, the history of polygamy in the United States, and how this kind of polygamous lifestyle affects the children that are the products of these family structures. As mentioned previously, there are two different forms of...show more content... In industrialized societies, it is something that has been made illegal, and is considered deviant. When most people think of polygamy they think of polygyny, the marriage of one man with multiple wives, and endless children. Here in the United States the most common occurrence of polygamy was in the 1800s, through the Mormon religion, and more specifically the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter–Day Saints. Through the reading of the Bible, the leader of the Latter– Day Saints church, Joseph Smith, had revelations that encouraged him take a second wife as many of the members of the Old Testament had done. The rest of the United States reacted negatively to polygamy and Congress passed several laws prohibited polygamy. However, Mormons continued to practice polygamy despite these laws because they believed it was within their right to do so based on the Bill of Rights which protected freedom of religion (Embry 2016). Polygamy has been illegal in the United States since 1878, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that freedom to practice the Mormon religion did not extend to having multiple wives (Reynolds v United States 1878). Federal law does not allow prospective immigrants who practice polygamy into the United States. Although, there has been polygamy found in New York among some immigrants from countries in which ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...
