  1. InterregVIC project C2CNin Slovenia GREEN 2nd CentralisedTrainingSessionandInternationalWorkshop, 22nd February – 24th February 2011 Marjana Dermelj Služba Vlade RS za razvoj in evropske zadeve

  2. Cradle 2 Cradleconcept http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jORau0V62c

  3. C2C concept is developed by William McDonough (USA) and dr. Michael Braungart (DE) New paradigmin product/services design and principles of eco effectiveness in design Calling towards 3rd industrial revolution Current principle: take-make-dispose (Cradle 2 Grave) C2C principles: Waste equals food The sun is our income Respect local diversity C2C principles

  4. Efficiency vs. effectiveness eco-effectiveness eco-efficiency vs Quantifies Qualifies Differentstrategyofdesignwhichenablescirculatinoftheproducts in the “naturalecosystems” and/or “technologicalsystems” Insteadofmakingbadproducts more efficiently, weshould start makingefficientlygoodproducts. 1. Qualityofresources(no toxics) 2. Efficientuseoftheseresourceswhich is animportanteconomicfactor.

  5. Natural and technological cycle Vir: http://mbdc.com/detail.aspx?linkid=1&sublink=6

  6. Bachausen, Austria: returnity (return + eternity) First textile on the world, which can be entirely recycled and which contains flame retardant Trevira CS Based on C2C philosophy: all advantages of the flame retartandt Trevira CS are preserved and benefit due to the respecting C2C principles. Environmentally acceptable production processes: no loss of natural materials No waste Possible further use Take back mechanism and their reuse is in place: Buyer keeps returnity `s “return note”, small discount upon return when purchase new products. Ensured use in the “technological cycle” Good practices (1)

  7. Herman Miller, USA: Chair Aeron Good ergonomic and functional characteristics Permanent guarantee (12 years 24/7 use), possibility for maintainance/fixing Use of environmentally acceptable materials, amon others also recycled plastic bottles Design is based on C2C principles  they respect stricter requirements than those in the legislation composition: alluminium(35 %), steel (33 %), plastics (29 %), foam/tekstil (3 %) without PVC 94 % recyclability at the end or the product`s life, composed of: 64 % recycled materials of which: 40 % already used waste materials (post consumer waste) 20 – 24 % not used waste materials 100 % renewable energy for the production Packaging could be reused/recyclable before Good practice(2) after

  8. Galactic, with the LOOPLA prosess: LOOPLA is a new and unique process based on a chemical recycling of PLA back into lactic acid. used PLA (post-Industrial or post-consumer) is mechanically pretreated, before entering into a reactor. The product is converted back into a crude lactic acid through thermal depolymerization. After a couple of purifications, lactic acid is obtained and can be recycled to make a virgin PLA with a yield close to 100%. Good practice(3)

  9. Good practice (3 - cont)

  10. Good practice (3 - cont)

  11. The Van Gansewinkel Groep (NL): their slogan is Waste no more They want to play an ever-increasing role in the collection and recycling of C2C-certified products, with the objective of bringing essential nutrients and raw materials back into use. The company provides return systems. It has several C2C-certified partners - including Van Houtum Papier, Mosa (tiles), Desso (carpets), Philips (electronics) - with whom it closely cooperates in closing the product cycle. Good practice(4)

  12. …. Van Houtum, produces toilet paper Satino, for which they obtained a Cradle to Cradle®certificate. Product is based on the recyled materials, in addition to C2C paper is also carbon neutral and has obtained FSC certificate and EU Eco label. Main reasons for why they decided to adopt this approach Strategic positioning: positive influence on the company`s profile Business model: closing materials loops helps in ensuring the resources as well as close cooperation with customers and suppliers Optimisation of future expenses :in the company are certain that soon this approach will be cheaper due to the increase of prices of water, energy, waste, resources; Licence to operate: in the future they expect that such approach could be mandatory It is fun Good practice (5)

  13. The C2CN is an INTERREG IVC project capitalisation/fast track network 10 partners co-operate: NL, BE, UK, FI, FR, AT, IT, RO HU, SI The goals: Creating a European platform for gathering and disseminating knowledge on C2C; Drawing up plans of Action plans, in which we demonstrate how C2C can be implemented; Establishing links with regional policy objectives, specifically with regional competitiveness and employment targets; Promoting regional stakeholder involvement. The priorities (target areas) selected are: Industry Area-specific spatial development Building design Governance. Creating Cradle2Cradle network

  14. Two phases: Phase 1 mainly focuses on the transferability of the already identified good practices within the selected priorities (target areas). Phase 2 addresses the development of regional actions plans, which are supported by both regional and joint activities. In the end, the project produces 10 regional action plans, a Good Practice Handbook and a Guide on Waste Management & C2C, which is also of great value for other parties concerned outside the partnership.
