The first three weeks During the first three weeks we look at what the children can do and complete a baseline booklet – which you will get a copy of in October It is a time when we get to know the children and they get to know us and each other – a very important social time Harrowby Church of England Infant School 2 2

The Foundation Stage Parents as partners As a school we spend time watching your child to see what they can do, obviously you spend more time with them than we do and so we would like you to tell us what they do at home The children will bring home a book for you to write in – anything that they do for the first time or something that you think is important for us to know Harrowby Church of England Infant School 16 16

The Foundation Stage Parents as partners Examples of things you could write:- Rode bike without stabilisers for the first time Went to the shops and counted things in the trolley (how many) Visited relatives and spoke to an unfamiliar adult Fastened their coat Put on socks by themselves Harrowby Church of England Infant School 17 17

  19. The Foundation Stage Parents as partners There will also be opportunities for you to come in to school and share your child’s experiences for example, harvest – fruit tasting October 3rd at 2.00pm. Harrowby Church of England Infant School 19 19

  20. Read, write, inc The children will be taught 4 sounds a week They will look at the picture and learn a rhyme about each sound Harrowby Church of England Infant School 20 20

  26. Read, write, inc. The children will bring home a sound book every night In this book there will be a picture to look at, a rhyme to learn and space to practice writing the letter Harrowby Church of England Infant School 26 26

  27. Read, write, inc. The children will be learning not only the sound single letters make but also that 2 or 3 letters together sometimes make 1 sound. For example, ie, ss, ai, ee. Harrowby Church of England Infant School 27 27

  29. Read, write, inc. Please practise the sound and writing the letter Practise the letter in lots of different ways, use large brushes and water outside, use thick crayons on large pieces of paper Harrowby Church of England Infant School 29 29

  30. Big Talk In a few weeks the children will bring home ‘Big Talk’ homework. Each week, on Friday, the children will be given a topic to discuss at home. On the following Friday we will have ‘Big Talk’ time in school where the children are encouraged to speak about that topic in a small group Harrowby Church of England Infant School 30 30

  31. Reading When the children are ready they will bring home a reading book and reading diary. Please sign this book when you have read their reading book with your child in the ‘Parent/Teacher Comments’ box and feel free to make a short comment if you wish to do so Harrowby Church of England Infant School 31 31

Reading As soon as your child’s teacher thinks they are ready your child will bring home a book with words in • To begin with the reading book will not • have words in, please talk about the • pictures and let the children make up their • own stories about what is happening Harrowby Church of England Infant School 32 32

  33. Reading Reading books will be changed three times a week on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. However, please ensure your child has their reading book in school EVERY day Harrowby Church of England Infant School 33 33

  34. Reading The children will bring home words in a packet to learn. These words cannot be blended, the children need to learn to read them on sight. We call them ‘red words’ • Please practise them each night if you can Harrowby Church of England Infant School 34 34

  35. StoryBags The children will bring home a story bag every other week. This will be on a Thursday Each bag contains either a story book, a non-fiction book, a number rhyme or a poem and some props to help them tell the story Harrowby Church of England Infant School 35 35

  36. StoryBags We would like you to share the story, book or poem with your child, encouraging them to talk about what they have heard Please return the bag on the following Tuesday Harrowby Church of England Infant School 36 36

  37. Maths games On the week the children do not have a story bag they will bring home a maths game Resources and equipment needed to play the game will be in the bag Please return the bag and its contents on the following Tuesday Harrowby Church of England Infant School 37 37
